Yusuf’s father, Hassan Mohammed, said that Yusuf was inspired to make the video after he heard Carson’s anti-Muslim comments. When Mohammed saw his son’s video earlier this week, he was “blown away.” The proud father said:
“He represented himself in such a professional way. I wasn’t expecting a 12-year-old to be able to respond to a presidential candidate this way. He’s brilliant.”
He’s right. For the entire video, Yusuf remains composed, professional and passionate while speaking directly to Carson. Yusuf asks:
“Mr. Carson, what if someone told you that you couldn’t become president because of your color?” he asks. “What if someone told you that you couldn’t become president because of your race? What if someone told you that you couldn’t become president because of your faith? That’s what you did to me.”
Yusuf tells of his heartbreak when Carson “shattered” his dreams to be president when the GOPer said a Muslim shouldn’t lead the country. It had been a dream of Yusuf’s since he was 2-3 years old. Yusuf pushed back:
“People would say that black people couldn’t become president. Guess what? I’m black and I’m Muslim … I will break that Muslim boundary. I will become the first Muslim president.”
Yusuf isn’t bluffing. According to his father, Yusuf is dead serious and is already making plans to kick off his political career with becoming president of his high school. You can tell by the confidence in Yusuf’s voice when he says:
“My name is Yusuf Dayur. And guess what, I don’t care what you say, because I will become president.”
