Tea party darling. GOP trailblazer. Religious advocate. Rep. Tim Scott (R-S.C.) was picked by Gov. Nikki Haley on Monday to fill retiring Jim DeMint’s South Carolina seat in the U.S. Senate, becoming the first African-American Republican in the Senate in more than three decades. Here are 10 facts about him:
-A tea partier, endorsed by former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin. She even tweetedearlier this month that he’d be a great choice to replace DeMint.-Parents separated when he 7-years-old, and he was mostly raised by his mother.-His childhood mentor was local Chick-fil-A manager John Moniz, who asked him why he only purchased french fries for lunch. Scott told him it was because he couldn’t afford a sandwich, so Moniz would bring him sandwiches in exchange for lunch conversations.
