Mayors Against Illegal Guns, the pro-gun control group co-founded by New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, plans to release a report Friday analyzing every mass shooting "identifiable through FBI data and media reports" that has occurred in the U.S. between January 2009 and this month.Defining a mass shooting as an incident where "at least four people were murdered with a gun," MAIG found there were 93 mass shootings in America during this period, or nearly two per month.
MAIG also analyzed the types of weapons used in each shooting and where they were purchased. According to the report, assault weapons or high-capacity weapons were used in about 15 percent of the shootings.Approximately 151 percent more people were shot when assault weapons or high capacity magazines were used, and 63 percent more people were killed.

The report, which was an update to another one released in February, also looked at whether the shooters in each incident were prohibited from owning guns by existing federal law. MAIG said there was only enough evidence to analyze this question in 75 of the 93 mass shootings. Of these 75 incidents, the report found about 57 percent involved someone who would not have been prohibited from owning a gun under current federal law.
