Many mysteries plague us regarding the press coverage of the Obama era, but one strikes me as central to our political predicament. Why, after everyone else has given it up, do members of the mainstream media persist in helping to hide—and therefore empower—the radicalization of the Republican Party?

The GOP strategy was clear from the start. Republicans, circa 2009, were no longer interested in bipartisan solutions to America’s problems. As then–Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell toldNational Journal, “The single most important thing we want to achieve is for President Obama to be a one-term president.” Senator Jim DeMint famously promised healthcare reform could be used to “break” Obama from day one. And that was before the Tea Party even existed.

Part of the problem, for far too long, was that President Obama collaborated in the charade. He was so invested in the notion that both sides could just get along and legislate together that he couldn’t part with the illusion he had helped to create. His communitarian rhetoric, together with his compromise-in-advance legislative strategy, was always oriented toward inclusiveness, consensus-building and, ultimately, political passivity. As a result, Obama allowed the Republicans to stymie his ability to act on behalf of most of his agenda, beginning with the underfunded stimulus and carrying through with virtually every single initiative he undertook throughout the first two years of his term.

Similarly, in April of this year, the Brookings Institution’s Thomas Mann and the American Enterprise Institute’s Norman Ornstein, who have been collaborating on Congressional studies for forty years, decided to cash in the credibility they’d earned as nonpartisan establishment voices and publish an op-ed in the Washington Post titled “Let’s Just Say It: The Republicans Are the Problem.”

Our Pres. was guilty of having a fair moral character, he was guilty of thinking the republican party was like himself and actually cared about this country and it's people,guilty of not having the people advising him, pull his coat to the right wing indifference, guilty of dimissing the right wing rhetoric, when they vowed to sink his ship, guilty of thinking "we the people" were willing and ready to embrace "YES WE CAN", guilty of naivety in his trust of his fellow man/women to do the right thing and actually buy the chest thumping of America's exceptionalism which is it's everybody "except" "we the people".  essentially he was guilty of being a good man and President in a fickled electorate and a jaded opposition, not to mention the disloyal in our ranks. "Good things come to those who wait", remember the Pres. said "we are the one's we have been waiting for".

In Democratic-dominated Hawaii, it may have seemed odd for Rep. Mazie Hirono (D) to tout the endorsement of a Republican Congressman less than three weeks before her party’s primary for the state’s open Senate seat.

But even in a state where the Congressional delegation consistently supports Democratic policies and President Barack Obama should win by a wide margin, the ability to work across party lines on behalf of Hawaii’s interests is an attractive message for voters across the political spectrum, Hirono and her campaign said Wednesday.

The Congresswoman said Rep. Don Young (R-Alaska) reached out to her to see what he could do on her behalf, including offering to film an ad with her. Their relationship was forged largely out of a joint amendment they pushed early last year to secure federal funding for education programs for native Hawaiians and native Alaskans.

Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell’s surprise decision to allow a Democratic tax bill to pass the upper chamber fits his political strategy of keeping the Senate GOP out of the spotlight.

McConnell (Ky.) decided to drop the customary 60-vote threshold for major legislation after discussing tactics for days with GOP colleagues and alerting conservative groups that might have otherwise panned the move.

A GOP leadership aide said the vote takes attention off the Senate GOP.

McConnell has told colleagues during private meetings this year that Senate Republicans should not make themselves the focus of partisan battles.

He did so despite voting against all three bills.

E. Holmes walked into a movie theater, wounding 58 and killing 12 and shocking a nation. The response has to this tragedy has been filled with the human empathy that should be extended to loved ones and a community that has suffered not only an attack on its people, but on its sense of safety and security. From Columbine to the shooting of Congresswoman Gabby Giffords to this latest shooting, the cries of those hit by the bullets of crazed gunmen move our nation to want to make communities feel safe. And we should do all we can to make communities safe

My problem is that we create a national pause for certain types of tragic loss of life but ignore others. I know that a few weeks ago I talked about us standing for Chicago, but this is not just about Chicago. This is about how we value our own lives; the lives of urban children, women and men, who many a night are trying to enjoy their communities; not at a theatre, but on their porches, playing in the streets or simply coming home from work. Why is there not national pause for them? Why not media attention on the families of those who fall daily?

 I don't blame the media for lifting the names of the fallen men, women, and children who were savagely taken by Holmes violent attack. I don't even blame the politicians and commentators for finding space to lift gun policy back into the front row for discussion. I just keep wondering; who will cry for us, go hard for us, defend us.

 there is a lessened sense of condolence for those in urban area's that are seen as not as important as the pretty blond haired blue eyed 19 yr old that went missing two months ago at a party, film at eleven. the media has more power then any other entity of public use. they are even more dangerous when they venture into opinionated reporting. they shape the minds of those who feel no need to question. the more incredulous the higher the ratings. Fox has for years engaged in this subliminal type of mind bending, to promote the right wing agenda. what do we do the only sources of news we have are these people we see daily on tv some we feel safe with their word others not so much. common sense is bandied around like all are able to access it. our own personal conundrum.

(CBS/AP) The making of a new "Lone Ranger" Disney movie, and the announcement that Johnny Depp is playing sidekick Tonto, have reawakened feelings about a character that has drawn much criticism over the years as being a Hollywood creation guilty of spreading stereotypes.

 The film is still in production, but the Native American community has been abuzz about it for months, with many sharing opinions online and a national Native publication running an occasional series on the topic.

 Some Native Americans welcome the new movie, which is slated for release next summer. Parts were filmed on the Navajo Nation with the tribe's support, and an Oklahoma tribe recently made Depp an honorary member.

sure is a lot of insensitive things being put out there in this last 4 years of racial expressions not of that ethnic group's character. 

do we laugh, hey it's Johnny Depp, always great and funny portraying ineptness of others and i'm sure this time will be no exception, or do we of compassion take umbrage to the farce played upon those of that focus?

not slamming film will most likely to see it myself and i'm sure, laugh at Depp's portrayal. so should we protest or laugh when it's funny but keep an open mind to some who may take offense i think the latter, but we won't know until it's our turn in the barrel, and how much of a stiff upper lip we can maintain.

Improving Black Education by Executive Order President Obama will announce to the Urban League a new initiative aimed at black achievement.

According to a senior administration official, the White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for African Americans will be a part of the Department of Education and will work with the president and Cabinet-level agencies "to identify evidence-based best practices to improve African-American students' achievement in school and college." It will also build a network of people, grassroots organizations and communities to share those practices.

In addition, the executive order creates a presidential commission on educational advancement for African-American students, with commission members advising the president and Education Secretary Arne Duncan on broad-stroke strategies meant to enhance educational opportunities for black Americans of all ages.

 A separate interagency working group will engage Cabinet agencies and senior officials at the White House in building programs "aimed at advancing outcomes for African Americans in early-childhood education; elementary, secondary and postsecondary education; career and technical education; and adult education," the administration official said.

"From allowing states to opt out of key No Child Left Behind provisions, introducing Race to the Top and releasing the Civil Rights Data Collection Report on educational disparities, President Obama continues to demonstrate the will to improve equity in education and access to college," remarked Ivory A. Toldson, Ph.D., a Howard University professor who is also contributing education editor for The Root.

An increasing number of studies are making the connections between human activities, climate change and a rise in extreme weather events. While it is difficult to point to climate change as causing a single weather event without in-depth research, patterns are emerging.

Scientists warn that climate change will bring an increase in heat waves, droughts, floods and worsening storms. Not a rosy forecast for our future, let alone our children's future.

From chocolate to our favorite island getaways, a variety of studies suggest that many of the things and places that we most enjoy may be gone if we stay on this path. Below is a list of some of the things that may be changed or ruined for future generations based on suggested effects of climate change. There is an element of speculation in this list, as predictions are difficult to determine.

Most experts agree that the changes are anthropogenic — caused by humans — largely from human emissions of greenhouse gases that are the result of burning fossil fuels. The chief greenhouse gas is carbon dioxide and C02 levels are at their highest in 650,000 years.

do you want to risk your family's future to an agenda you know will not address this encroaching disaster?  republican way is not the American way no matter how many times they say it.

When Mitt Romney was governor of Massachusetts he kept his distance from gambling. He turned down donations from the gaming industry for his privately underwritten inaugural gala. And though heinitially supported allowing the establishment of slot parlors in order to close a $3 billion state deficit, he later announced he would not consider an expansion of gambling and decried the "social costs associated with gaming." On the presidential campaign trail this year, Romney similarly declared that he opposed online pokerbecause "of the social costs and people's addictive gambling habits." He explained, "I don’t want to increase access to gaming. I feel that we have plenty of access to gaming right now through the various casinos and establishments that exist."

As a onetime bishop of the Mormon church—which opposes gambling, including state-sponsored lotteries—Romney's lack of enthusiasm about legalized gambling is hardly surprising. Yet such reservations did not hinder him when he was a mega-financier. While Romney ran Bain Capital, the private equity firm he founded, he owned a Bain-affiliated investment fund that bet heavy on betting.

a Bain-related entity wholly owned by Romney, filed a document with the Securities and Exchange Commission detailing the investments held the past quarter in its $559 million portfolio. On this roster were 1.2 million shares of Gtech Holdings Corp., then valued at $29 million. The company billed itself in its 1999 annual report as "a leading global supplier of systems and services to the lottery and gaming/entertaining industries." This description put it mildly; GTECH was the world's largest supplier of computer equipment for lotteries

It operated about 30 of 37 state lotteries in the United States, along with lotteries in England, Israel, Turkey, Australia, and other countries. It also was teaming up with big gaming firms to buy or revamp casinos and race tracks, adding and upgrading gambling equipment at these venues.

In 1998, Gtech had pulled in nearly $1 billion in revenue from its varioius gaming ventures. At the time Romney was investing in the firm, it was seeking to become a pioneer in Internet gambling.

has this exposed another instance of Romney's ignoring the tenets of his religion?  i know there is suppose to be no religious test to office but there is especially on the republican side, look at the influence of who and who's not acceptable by Evangelical's. apparently Romney getting  pass begs to question who gave up their religious convictions, or maybe better said who lost them?

Dems won’t consent to correcting typo in GOP's regulatory bill

Republicans hoping to use unanimous consent to fix a typo in their regulatory freeze bill will hit a brick wall in the form of Rep. Steny Hoyer.

"I'm not going to give unanimous consent," Hoyer (D-Md.), the Democratic whip, said Wednesday during a breakfast in Washington sponsored by the Christian Science Monitor.

"You know, I'm astounded by this — absolutely dumbfounded," Hoyer quipped, "because I know the Republicans read the bills."

Sponsored by Rep. Tim Griffin (R-Ark.), the GOP proposal is intended to prevent federal agencies from adopting significant new regulations before the nation's unemployment rate drops to 6 percent or below. The current rate is 8.2 percent.

But the bill was miswritten to say the new regulations can be adopted only after the employment rate is 6 percent or lower — meaning the nation's jobless rate would have to hit 94 percent before agencies could issue new rules.

The House is scheduled to vote on the proposal Thursday, and GOP leaders hope to fix the error with Democrats' support before then.

these right wing politicians are like sharks, they smell a little blood in the water and go on a blind feeding frenzy, and like a mother bird the regurgitate it on their base. looks like they're dependence on other's to be complicit to their dirty deeds is just not paying off. i'm luvin' it.


but we can't lose sight of the fact they could pull this off which would make us the laughing stock of the world, and the mantle of democracy.

Obama, Romney Square Off On Foreign Policy

SEATTLE -- In a rare face-off on foreign policy, President Barack Obama and Republican rival Mitt Romney are swapping sharp criticism but exposing few clear policy differences on key national security matters.

For Romney, who seeks to boost his foreign policy credentials as he begins a high-stakes trip abroad, a lack of specific proposals has exposed him to a flurry of criticism from Obama and his surrogates. Just over three months from Election Day, the president's team has dug in on its efforts to cast the Republican as a national security lightweight while trying to capitalize on Obama's strength on such issues.

Following Romney's speech Tuesday to the Veterans of Foreign Wars convention, Vice President Joe Biden said Romney "reflexively criticizes the president's policies without offering any alternatives."

"When he does venture a position," Biden said, "it's a safe bet that he previously took exactly the opposite position and will probably change his mind again and land in the wrong place – far out of the mainstream."

Romney's campaign has swatted away that criticism, but it's also shown few signs that the presumptive GOP nominee will offer more specific areas of contrast with Obama when he meets with world leaders overseas. Instead, Romney has continued with broad jabs casting Obama as a timid leader.

But Larry Pratt—the president of Gun Owners of America, a far-right Second Amendment group that's backed by prominent people likeSen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.)—has a different theory. 

Pratt believes the timing of Holmes' rampage, which left 12 people dead and 58 wounded, seemed designed to coincide with the upcoming negotiation of the United Nations Small Arms Treaty. Apress release sent out to radio bookers on Tuesday advertising Pratt's availability noted that, "In an article posted at The New American...one expert even outlined a theory that Holmes didn't act alone, but was possibly 'enlisted' to carry out his violent act." Pratt, the publicist stated, was free for interviews on Holmes' "impeccable" timing.

White House warns of $1,600 tax hike on 114M middle-class families

The White House has launched a new offensive in its fight with congressional Republicans over taxes, arguing 114 million middle-class families will see their taxes rise without action by Congress.

A report from President Obama’s National Economic Council released Monday contends the families would see their taxes rise by an average of $1,600 if the George W. Bush-era tax cuts expire as scheduled at the end of the year. 

 The GOP has argued that all of the Bush-era rates should be extended for a year, and the House is expected to vote to approve that extension next week.

 The Democrat-controlled Senate is expected to vote this week on legislation to extend tax rates only on those with annual income up to $250,000. Senate Republicans are pressing for a separate vote to extend all of the tax rates. “Today, while Republicans and Democrats in Washington rarely see eye to eye, everyone agrees that extending middle-class tax cuts will give working families and our economy a little more certainty at this make‐or‐break moment,” the report says. “So far, the only reason the middle-class tax cuts have not been extended is that Republicans in Congress continue to insist on cutting taxes once again for the wealthiest few.”

it seems that letting the country go down no longer is a right wing plus, they are now demonizing our Pres. for taking a page from their book and see who blinks first.  they do it ok he does it, "oh crap it's all over now".

‘You Didn’t Build That,’ Uncut and Unedited

Mitt Romney and his allies have attacked President Barack Obama — often out of context — for saying, “If you’ve got a business — you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen.”

• American Crossroads posted a 60-second Web video called “Build” that shows small-business owners reacting to Obama’s “you didn’t build that” comment.
• The Romney campaign replays Obama saying “if you’ve got a business, you didn’t build that” five times in a 15-second video as part of a “petition” drive. It also uses the quote in an email fundraising appeal.
• Sen. Scott Brown of Massachusetts posted a two-and-a-half-minute Web video that juxtaposes the president’s remarks against statements made by other presidents on the importance of free enterprise.

There’s no question Obama inartfully phrased those two sentences, but it’s clear from the context what the president was talking about. He spoke of government — including government-funded education, infrastructure and research — assisting businesses to make what he called “this unbelievable American system that we have.”

In summary, he said: “The point is … that when we succeed, we succeed because of our individual initiative, but also because we do things together.”

American Crossroads, the conservative group founded with the help of Karl Rove, posted aWeb video July 20 that features the president’s comments. Twice, Obama is shown saying: “If you’ve got a business — you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen.”

Small-business owners responded to the president’s remarks with outrage. “What an insult,” says one.

The video does not include any other remarks from the president’s speech, including the five sentences preceding his remarks when he says: “If you were successful, somebody along the line gave you some help. There was a great teacher somewhere in your life. Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive. Somebody invested in roads and bridges.”

Three days earlier, the Romney campaign posted a 15-second video that shows the president saying over and over, “If you’ve got a business — you didn’t build that.” Five times, in all.

Austerity's Big Winners Prove To Be Wall Street And The Wealthy

WASHINGTON -- The poor and middle classes have shouldered by far the heaviest burdens of the global political obsession with austerity policies over the past three years. In the United States, budget cuts have forced states to reduce education, public transportation, affordable housing and other social services. In Europe, welfare cuts have driven some severely disabled individuals to fear for their lives.

But the austerity game also has winners. Cutting or eliminating government programs that benefit the less advantaged has long been an ideological goal of conservatives. Doing so also generates a tidy windfall for the corporate class, as government services are privatized and savings from austerity pay for tax cuts for the wealthiest citizens.

U.S. financial interests that stand to gain from Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security cutbacks "have been the core of the big con," the "propaganda," that those programs are in crisis and must be slashed, said James Galbraith, an economist at the University of Texas.

Advocates of austerity measures have sold their proposals as a means to improve the economy.

"It is an error to think that fiscal austerity is a threat to growth and job creation," declared European Central Bank President Jean-Claude Trichet in July 2010.

"We're going to cut spending to get the debt down, help create jobs and prosperity, and reform government programs," vowed Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.), chairman of the House Budget Committee, in a February 2011 commentary for Real Clear Politics. Ryan would later declare that his budget plan, with far more aggressive austerity measures than those ultimately enacted by Congress -- including $6.2 trillion in spending cuts -- would have spurred $1.5 trillion in economic growth and created 2.5 million jobs.

Erskine Bowles, co-chairman of the bipartisan commission that worked on the plan, is a director at Morgan Stanley, the sixth-largest American bank and a financial institution for which the United States made huge commitments to help it weather the economic downturn. Morgan Stanley took $10 billion in bailout funds under the Troubled Asset Relief Program and received more than $100 billion a day in cheap loans from the Federal Reserve at the height of the past financial crisis. For weeks, Morgan Stanley borrowed more money from the Fed than the company's stock market value.

That solicitude for the profits of big corporations shows up in Simpson-Bowles too. The plan offers multiple corporate tax reform proposals, but one, which calls for shifting to a so-called territorial tax system, would be especially advantageous to Morgan Stanley and other Wall Street banks. It would allow U.S. companies to permanently avoid paying U.S. taxes on overseas income, including money stashed in offshore tax havens like the Cayman Islands. According to a 2008 report by the Government Accountability Office, Morgan Stanley operates 273 sub-companies headquartered in such tax havens.

While Social Security advocates have attacked the plan, the Business Roundtable, a lobbying group for corporate CEOs, has praised Simpson-Bowles. So has Peter Peterson, who served as Richard Nixon's commerce secretary before founding Blackstone Group, a major private equity firm. Peterson has long advocated cuts to Social Security and Medicare, and he started a think tank devoted to federal debt reduction in 2008.

with all this rhetoric where is the break for "we the people", where is the hiring of "we the people" other than in their stump speeches, where is the sunshine in "we the people's" lives?  do you think we should listen to European banks aren't they on a bigger cliff then we were? with every answer they come up with it only profits the right wing constituency, not "we the people", when are "we the people" going to act like we are one more flush from circling the drain?
