I don't know what happened or to how bad the punishment was so I decline to judge him.  Black families early days were deeply engrossed in their religious beliefs it was all they had in the days of slavery and actually today as well.  there has always been a corporal punishment in Black families some overly cruel I can testify to that others are flashbacks of their experience manifesting on their kids. I remember throughput childhood hearing the Biblical quote that I have not herd or read anyone bring up during the bash fest of Peterson and Rice and that was "spare the rod spoil the child that was the way it was said to us what it is, is in the links below.

the teachings of the Bible were strong but I have to think flashbacks of their childhood when parents were much more decisive and harsh has some influence it the act of punishing by whipping, was it also an origin of slave beatings passed down?
