Hard-working Florida mother of three died due to lack of Medicaid coverage
Charlene Dill never did make it to her friend’s house in March. The hard-working Florida mother , forced to work three part-time jobs to make ends meet for her and her family, evidently collapsed and died on a total stranger’s floor during her one p/t job as a vacuum cleaner salesmen. Charlene may have sold vacuums, but nothing sucks more than knowing her death could have been averted had Florida, one of many Republican-controlled states that opted out of Obamacare’s Medicaid expansion and leaving millions out in the cold, offered Charlene health care.
Charlene, who went uninsured for years and missed out on the care she needed to address her chronic heart condition, is one of millions of low-income Americans who make too little to qualify for the Obamacare subsidies. Consequently, these people fall into a coverage gap. Of course this was supposed to be corrected by state’s accepting the generous federal funds being allocated to them for the first few years, but it turns out that the president is still Kenyan in his second term so no.
And while the Medicaid doctor reimbursement rate is significantly lower than for Medicare and varies state-by-state, doctors in Florida who accept Medicaid patients would get a 70 percent increase in pay for the first two years. So although not a long-term solution, it’s unquestionably a lucrative incentive. Public policy quibbling notwithstanding, there’s absolutely no reason why Charlene and other should be put in this terrible situation. Perhaps Florida’s Governor (or batboy all grown up) might be compelled to finally accept funds for the expansion, as previously indicated, upon reading these emotional words written in a blog post by a good friend of Charlene.
