Koch-Tied Groups Funded GOP Effort to Mess With Electoral College Rules

Last election season, a shadowy nonprofit pumped hundreds of thousands of dollars into a campaign to change how electoral votes are counted. The group didn't disclose who was funding its efforts—a fact that Mother Jones highlighted in a story titled "Who's Paying for the GOP's Plan to Hijack the 2012 Election?" 

But now, thanks to Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW), a nonpartisan government watchdog, it's clear that organizations with ties to billionaire industrialists Charles and David Koch footed at least some of the bill.

Each state and the District of Columbia has a certain number of electoral votes, based on their population, and they get to decide for themselves how those votes should be allotted. 

Currently, every state except Maine and Nebraska gives all of their electoral votes to the candidate who wins the statewide popular vote. But in 2011, GOP lawmakers in Pennsylvania and Wisconsin introduced bills that would divide electoral votes among candidates based on how many congressional districts they won. 

Because Republicans drew the boundaries of the districts in those states, this scheme would be almost certain to hand Republican presidential candidates the majority of their electoral votes—even if more voters cast ballots for Democrats. (Read more about how the plan would work here.) Presuming the race is close enough, this could decide the nationwide outcome.

this is the biggest failure of all gov't and courts to allow this gimmick that is clearly design to tip the scales in favor of republicans, why is there not a drive to litigate this grand theft of our votes?

2012 Americans voted for Dems to take over the house by a million plus and they knew they had no wind so they gerrymander just before the voting, clearly that was hijacking the election, 

they are emboldened because those million plus voters who's vote was rendered null and void by republicans made no noise the DOJ didn't either they sat back and took it, now they are poised to do it again expecting no opposition, will Americans let them take the keys because we sure as hell didn't give them to them at least intentionally, will our law enforcement enforce?

In the case of Pennsylvania, a mysterious nonprofit called All Votes Matter spent large sums lobbying for these changes. Local officials wondered about its funding sources. "They raised an awful lot of money very quickly—$300,000 in just a few days,"

Democratic Pennsylvania state Sen. Daylin Leach told Mother Jones at the time. "We're all curious where that level of funding comes from." But All Votes Matter didn't disclose its donors, nor did it have to. The group is organized as a 501(c)4 "social welfare" nonprofit, which means that it can spend money on politics while keeping its donors secret.

(Such groups are not supposed to spend more than half of their budget on political causes, but IRS enforcement is slack.) Thus the public knew little about the agendas behind this effort to upend the mechanics of presidential elections.

the gov't is suppose to be of by and for the people if so why are we not privy to who is loading up for who when it comes to our political workings?  this should be the number one business by this admin this year give us back our right to fair and honest elections. if we don't have that then we cannot legally have democratic elections.

Tapped to interview President Barack Obama on Super Bowl Sunday, professionally hostile Fox News host Bill O'Reilly insists he's deeply interested in what the president has to say. "We do want to hear his side," O'Reilly said last week. "I think that's the key thing. I'm genuinely interested in hearing his response to my questions."

If the Fox host wants to pay attention to Obama's comments, maybe he'll let the president actually answer his questions this year? In 2011, the last time O'Reilly sat down to interview Obama for a Super Bowl telecast, the host famously interrupted Obama.

deja vu all over again, the Fox guy is wringing his hands and licking his lips he thinks he is going to expose that which the rest of the headhunters couldn't unbeknownst to him it's all fairy tales non of the fantasy stories are true they are like his made up.

he also considers himself to be smarter than Pres. but we know the truth. he'll undoubtedly try to create suspicion for the "folks" to feed on after all he's looking out for them.

He cut the president off, constantly interjected comments, and redirected the interview midstream. O'Reilly often asked Obama questions that required complicated answers and then jumped in with new ones after giving Obama just a few seconds to answer the first query.

It seemed like he didn't want the president finish a sentence. O'Reilly kept up the constant stream of interruptions even when the interview shifted towards non-combative topics, such as the pending Super Bowl. (O'Reilly: "You know blitzes and coverage and all that?")

now he will parade around pompous as usual and brag on his skill and what he will extract from Pres., reasonable people will see his trying to out maneuver Pres. but the only way to even come close to that is to follow the last script and be the republican conversation domineering bloviator he is leaving us with the same opinion of him as we had all the long. 

now he will try and come off as a good interviewer but the colors will shine through he will not be satisfied with a "fair and balance" interview no flash.

Members of Congress Get Millions in Farm Subsidies

Congress passes the Farm Bill under the guise of helping small family farmers. My grandparents had a pig farm in southeastern Minnesota, so I understand how hard farming can be. But most farm subsidies don’t actually go to family farmers like my grandma and grandpa. Most of the subsidies go to large, politically-connected farm companies instead. And new data show that millions in farm subsidies go straight to Capitol Hill.

New analysis from the Environmental Working Group’s farm subsidy database reveals that several members of Congress receive farm subsidies themselves. From the Wall Street Journal:

The federal payments to the lawmakers—13 Republicans and two Democrats—ranged from $339 to Rep. Randy Neugebauer (R., Texas) to $70,574 to Rep. Stephen Fincher (R., Tenn.) [in 2012].  [...] The payments to all but two of the lawmakers were well above the average of $604 paid to the lowest-subsidized 80% of farmers between 1995 and 2012, the group said.

are you getting that twitch up the back of your neck? congress is no longer for those who truly want to serve the public some do but others are only there for the perks.

This is a problem: Many of the people who make decisions on farm programs also directly benefit from them. Some benefit a great deal: Rep. Stephen Fincher collected $3.48 million between 1995 and 2012. This conflict of interests is troubling because it discourages members of Congress from reforming Farm Bill programs, leading to higher and higher spending levels out of Washington.

A few the members who receive farm subsidies sit on the agricultural committees in Congress, meaning that they have extra-powerful positions in shaping U.S. farm policy. Sen. Chuck Grassley—who received over $327,000 in farm subsidies between 1995 and 2012—sits on the Senate Agriculture Committee, for example. Bill markups in Committee should be an opportunity for debating and reforming broken Farm bill programs, yet we see members of Congress green-light bills that expand many of the programs they directly benefit from.

The Farm Bill is quickly moving through Congress right now. The Senate will wrap up debate and likely pass its version of bill this week, and the House of Representatives will begin considering its version in June. This bill is bigger and more bloated than ever, and it won’t primarily help small struggling family farms, as its sponsors falsely advertise. Now more than ever, the Farm Bill needs reform.

A few weeks after publicly defending New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie's role in the George Washington Bridge scandal, former New York City Mayor Rudy Giulianiadded a fresh thread to his thoughts on the controversy.

In an interview with WABC radio's Geraldo Rivera obtained by Capital New York, Giuliani said it's "fifty-fifty" that Christie was aware of fired aide Bridget Kelly's discussions that led to the lane closures.

"It leaves you with no possible way of knowing did she discuss it with him or didn't she discuss it with him," Giuliani said, according to the Capital New York report.

Giuliani's Thursday comments marked a stark contrast from his thoughts three weeks earlier. On Jan. 9, Christie issued a public apology at a press conference, saying he was "sad" and "heartbroken" over his aides' betrayal. Hours later, Giuliani appeared on CNN's "Anderson Cooper 360," dismissing the bridge scandal as a stupid political prank.

"Politically stupid things, political pranks that turn bad, all that other stuff, every administration -- don't tell me this doesn't happen in the Obama administration, the Clinton administration, the Bush administration," Giuliani said.

Republicans Want to Change States' Constitutions to Conform to Their Ideology

What happens when a constitution doesn’t conform to the Republican Party’s ideology?  If it’s the constitution of the United States, they revise its meaning, or make something up about the original intent of the constitutional protection.  

One great example of this  is the Republican claim that freedom of religiononly applies to the faux Christianity they use to defend unsustainable economic policies and justify their hatred for everyone who isn’t faux Christian, rich, pale and male.

If it’s a state’s constitution, Republicans won’t acknowledge that their ideology and policies are unconstitutional.  Rather, they’ll change the constitution so that it conforms to their ideology.  We’re seeing this happen in states like Missouri where the state constitution guarantees a citizen’s right to vote.

On Monday, Republicans in Missouri introduced a bill to assure the state constitution conforms to the Republican’s long established ideology of vote suppression.

The state legislature proposed two vote suppression bills on Monday because they have to make the constitution conform to their ideological opposition to political freedom in order for a second law that restricts the vote can be constitutionally compliant.

To that end, the first proposed law calls for a ballot measure to change the constitution so that voting is no longer a guaranteed constitutional right.

Shall the Missouri Constitution be amended to state that voters may be required by law to verify one’s identity, citizenship, and residence by presenting identification that may include valid government-issued photo identification?

MSNBC President Apologizes To RNC Chair For Tweet, Fires Staffer

MSNBC President Phil Griffin has apologized to Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus for a tweet by the network that ignited a conservative firestorm

Griffin issued a personal apology for the entire episode on Thursday.

"The tweet last night was outrageous and unacceptable. We immediately acknowledged that it was offensive and wrong, apologized, and deleted it. We have dismissed the person responsible for the tweet," Griffin said in a statement according to The Huffington Post. 

"I personally apologize to Mr. Priebus and to everyone offended. At msnbc we believe in passionate, strong debate about the issues and we invite voices from all sides to participate. That will never change."

The tweet that started it all suggested that conservatives would hate the image of an "adorable new #Cheerios ad w/ biracial family." It was a reference to a 2013 Cheerios commercial that featured a biracial family.

this company is morphing into a right wing affiliate this is tantamount to republicans saying something true about Limbaugh then have to kiss the ring.  

the tweet is probably true they are that kind of racist org to get all hissy because they were called out for what they are, but they can do the things they've done and said about Pres. rag on msnbc and it's personnel accusing them of what they do on the right wing and they cave,

In response to the since-deleted tweet Priebus told conservatives to boycott MSNBC. According to Politico the RNC's ban on MSNBC was lifted in response to the apology.

A brand new poll shows Christie's favorably ratings have fallen a jaw-dropping 27 points in 40 days.  A dive quick enough to blow out your ear drums.  Just last month, Christie enjoyed a positive +12 national approval rating (43% to 31%).  Today, PPP finds his ratings at the bottom of Hudson River, with a negative -15 rating (31% to 46%).  OUCH!  

I should add that while PPP's last national poll was taken 40 days ago, the evidence that Christie's office was behind the closing of the George Washington Bridge emerged only 21 days ago, on January 8th.  So the 27 point collapse has essentially occurred over the past three weeks (hat tip chicago minx for pointing that out).

But it gets better!

A Chicago woman has sued the employer that fired herhours after she received a cancer diagnosis.

Elisa Madonia said she was diagnosed with stage three esophageal cancer in October, reported WBBM-TV, and her doctors sent property management company S37 letters about her illness and her possible need for significant time off for treatment.

Less than two hours later, Madonia said, her boss called her into the officer and suggested she resign from the job she’d held for four years.

She said the employer offered to pay six months of COBRA if she signed a separation letter but then terminated her.

“Not only I’m being hit with a disease, that I have cancer, now you take my job too away from me?” Madonia said.

Her attorney, Eugene Hollander, said the termination was illegal and asked why the company made no offer to reach an agreement on scheduling while she underwent radiation treatment.

58 Republicans Supported Increasing the Minimum Wage When Bush Was President

ent Obama's 2014 State of the Union address was his executive order that will raise the minimum wage for employees working with federal contractors to $10.10 an hour. 

The President is taking action on his own because Republicans are deeply set against Democrats' efforts to raise the federal minimum wage.

In short, many in the GOP are playing politics with the income of millions of Americans.

Although Republicans are more ideologically conservative than Democrats, their lack of support for minimum wage increases can't be attributed solely to their economic philosophy. 

Back when George W. Bush was president, 82 of the 202 GOP House members voted for theFair Minimum Wage Act of 2007. Many in the Senate did as well (although it was part of a larger package). The Act increased the minimum wage from $5.15 to $7.25 an hour.

it's no secret that all that they block Pres. from doing his job for you none of these things that are not new were a problem before with other presidents

While many of the 2007 Congressional Republicans have since been replaced, most of them are still in office today. Of the current members of Congress, 39 House Republicans and 19 Senate Republicans supported the 2007 wage increase under Bush. All are expected to vote against Obama's minimum wage increase.

The advantages of raising the minimum wage above $10 are myriad. It would inject at least$60 billion into our economy, providing a necessary stimulus for accelerating our sluggish recovery. Because these workers wouldn't be as dependent on social services like welfare, rent assistance, and food stamps, federal and local taxes would both be lowered.

At a time of rising concern over income inequality, a minimum wage increase would demonstrate to ordinary Americans that the government is as concerned about their financial well-being as they are about the interests of the 1%. Finally, and most importantly, a minimum wage increase would provide necessary support for working class individuals and families.

so far all we have heard is that same song of no but again it's not so much to Pres. they are singing that song to you.  inequality doesn't mean match dollar for dollar it's just the same opportunity, republicans talk about status quo, so we would look up to the 1% and aspire to be like them giving us a reason to try harder if he stops for a breath he'll suck his whole body in his mouth because he's the only one sucking that in.

24 House Republicans Just Voted To Deny The Reality Of Climate Change

The House Energy and Commerce Committee Tuesday voted down an amendment that would have stated conclusively that climate change is occurring.

E&C Committee members voted 24-20 against the amendment, introduced by Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) to H.R. 3826, the Electricity Security and Affordability Act. That bill, if it makes it through Congress, would put an end to EPA regulations on emissions for new power plants until technologies like carbon capture and storage are commercially viable in at least six states for one year. 

It passed in Tuesday’s committee, but the amendment, which would have placed on the record that the committee accepts that climate change is happening and is caused by greenhouse gas pollution, did not.

this puts republicans if passed by the house that's a slam dunk they get to kill one of the thorns in their sides EPA do you realize when they are a majority anywhere they will set about doing things like this,

Twenty-four E&C members — all Republicans — voted against the amendment. Among them was E&C Chair Rep. Fred Upton (R-MI), who has said before that he doesn't think climate change is caused by human activity, and Joe Barton (R-TX), who also questions humans' role in climate change. In total, the Republicans who voted to deny climate change have accepted about $9.3 million in career contributions from the oil, gas and coal industries, according to analysis by the CAP Action War Room.

This isn't the first time House Republicans have rejected amendments stating the reality of climate change. In 2011, House Republicans voted down amendments that called on Congress to accept that climate change is real, man-made, and a human health threat.

Scientists, of course, disagree with the committee members. Ninety-seven percent of scientific studies that take a stance on climate change agree that human activity is causing climate change. In October, a study found that temperatures in the Canadian Arctic today are warmer than at any point in the last 44,000 years and possibly even as far back as 120,000 years.

they are in opposition to do one thing stop the threat to big business of regulations designed to keep us and earth safe from them the would be polluters, but they won't stop at EPA consumer reg high on the list so banks loan co.'s can go back to ripping you off all while the tell you how bad regulation is, is it as bad as dying from contaminated everything just so they can make more money at your family's expense. recognize

Utah School Threw Out Students' Lunches Because They Were In Debt

A Utah school’s child nutrition manager threw out the lunches of about 40 elementary school students this week after the kids’ parents fell behind on payment.

Some parents at Uintah Elementary in Salt Lake City say they didn’t even realize they were indebted to the school. The school apparently made calls Monday and Tuesday telling some parents that there was a balance on their accounts, and the children of those who had missed the call were the ones whose lunches got thrown out.

According to the Salt Lake Tribune, the child nutrition manager’s original plan was to withhold lunches for kids whose parents hadn’t paid. But cafeteria workers were unable to distinguish who was on that list before serving. Once the food had been dished out, food safety codes say it can’t be given to another student and must be thrown away.

The children were given milk and fruit instead of a full lunch — the meal that the school says it gives any child who isn’t able to pay.

“So she took my lunch away and said, ‘Go get a milk,’ ” recalled one student, a fifth grader named Sophia. “I came back and asked, ‘What’s going on?’ Then she handed me an orange. She said, ‘You don’t have any money in your account so you can’t get lunch.’”

it is amazing how mean spirited people charged with children's well being and education for 6 rs. a day.  they choose to obey a law that truly reprehensible and apathetic toward children.  it's known that children can't function at their best when hungry so these people are failing in obligation across the board.

Parents were outraged by the move, calling it “traumatic and humiliating.”

Salt Lake City’s school district has apologized to parents and students for the incident. “We again apologize and commit to working with parents in rectifying this situation and to ensuring students are never treated in this manner again,” the district said in a Facebook note.

Still, the incident raises longstanding questions about child nutrition and low-income families. It is not the first time that students have had their lunch thrown out for insufficient funds. In November, a Texas middle school student’s lunch was thrown away because he was 30 cents short on payment.

this was clearly meant to embarrass the parents by using the kid as the instrument of the humiliation.  regardless to what the law says it is un Christian to obey that law to throw food away instead of calling parent and awaring them of the delinquent bill, but i  today's economy the parents could be out of work and that school lunch might have been all they get to eat a day.

Libertarians are a funny bunch. By funny I mean ignorant not only of basic economics but also the ride they’ve been taken on by the Christian Right and the neo-Confederates within the Republican Party.

Nullification of the federal government is now the weapon of choice for theocrats, libertarians and white supremacists. Since 2010, state legislatures have put forward nearly 200 bills challenging federal laws its sponsors deem unconstitutional. Typically, laws the nullifiers believe challenge “religious liberty,” the Affordable Care Act and gun control.

Recently, Kansas signed into law the Second Amendment Protection Act, which prohibits the enforcement of federal laws regulating guns manufactured and used within the state. Missouri put forward a bill that would have allowed for the arrest of federal agents enforcing gun laws. Similar bills have been introduced in 37 other states.
