“Doctor Shortage Likely to Worsen With Health Law” (front page, July 29) raises the timely issue that we are quickly spiraling toward a physician shortage. One thing that must be done is increase the number of residency positions in American hospitals.Physician training has two distinct stages: medical school followed by a residency in a teaching hospital or academic medical center. But in 1997, Medicare capped compensated training positions. Hospitals that train more doctors than their cap pay the full cost, and this, coupled with reductions in reimbursement for charity care and other factors, is growing unaffordable.Furthermore, Medicare pays for only about a third of the full cost of training, so the financial stress is intensified.
IMO short and sweet, yes there is ashortage of specialist, the right wing never allowed healthcare to pass before there was no need for these additional specialist, like everything else in the American history the heath service will adapt, demand will go up more will answer the call. this is a scare tactic that has no lengthy impact. money will still be made,what do they think the medical business is just going to throw up their hands and say "too many sick people"? assignments change take on more or less whichever is more efficient.
where is that "AMERICAN EXCEPTIONALISM" republicans always tout, it only applies when it's their stuff?
if every advance made had succumbed to the obstructionist agenda and never been implemented, would we still be using leeches for treatments?
