Student loan interest rates are set to double July 1, from 3.4 percent to 6.8 percent but a gridlocked Congress has yet to act to prevent the hike from taking effect.

The interest rate increase on Stafford loans would bring subsidized loans up to the same rate as unsubsidized ones for any new undergraduates seeking assistance financing college. In 2007, both types of loans had an equal interest rate of 6.8 percent, but a bill in Congress gradually reduced the subsidized rate, reaching 3.4 percent in 2011. Its aim was to make college more affordable and was to last until 2013, but the reduced rates were ended for budgetary reasons and the law's expiration was moved to 2012. Last June, it was extended one year in a compromise after President Barack Obama encouraged Congress to keep the lower rates.

what is it with congress every positive bill or initiative they either want to kill it or put it out of reach for middle class and low income citizens?

There are differing proposals in Congress to deal with the issue. House Republicans want to allow student interest loan rates to vary year to year, pegged to the U.S. treasury rate. It passed a bill that would match student rates to the treasury rate, plus 2.5 percentage points, but it has not been taken up in the Senate and Obama said he would veto it.

Republican Rep. John Kline of Minnesota, chairman of the House Education and Workforce Committee and author of the House bill, accused Senate Democrats of obstructing a solution to the issue by refusing to take up the bill, and said the "11th-hour scrambling" demonstrates why politics shouldn't be a part of the debate:

Our students deserve better. We're in this predicament because politicians put themselves in charge of setting interest rates, guaranteeing exactly this type of down-to-the-wire uncertainty for students and their families. What we need is a long-term solution that gets Washington out of the business of setting rates altogether.

Obama's plan to keep interest rates low would also peg them to the treasury, but add .93 percentage points. Senate Democrats don't like either the House plan nor Obama's, and have proposed several different plans. With a lengthy debate on immigration legislation just having ended, the Senate is unlikely to pass any plan before the July 1 deadline.

Some say the business of student loans should be left to private companies, with the government staying out altogether.

MSNBC’s Al Sharpton spoke today with Rod Vereen, the attorney representing Rachel Jeantel, a key witness for the state in the murder trial of George Zimmerman. Sharpton noted how the defense attorneys went out of their way to discredit her testimony, and brought up some of the vicious attacks on Jeantel during and following her two days in the courtroom. 

Immediately following the interview, Sharpton condemned the attacks on her that “have been nothing short of offensive to any American.”

Vereen explained that because Jeantel is still under subpoena, she cannot talk to anyone about her testimony, but said that “her body language tells me that she’s happy that it’s over with.” Sharpton brought up how the defense “tried to discredit Rachel” by grilling her about initially lying over why she didn’t attend Trayvon Martin‘s funeral. 

Sharpton found her explanation, that she felt guilty about being the last person who spoke to him before he died, “pretty reasonable to me.”

don't understand what's to be gained by attacking the witness the jury is sequestered, they won't hear this only ones left is you and me, what's to be gained, ahh are they in anticipation of a hung jury or something that would cause a retrial and therefore poisoning the jury pool of any future litigation?

Sharpton concluded the segment with a swift condemnation of the attacks on Jeantel’s character.

“The attacks that I’ve heard on Rachel Jeantel have been nothing short of offensive to any American that wants to see young people… to do the right thing and come forward. No matter what happens in this trial, if people come forward, they ought not be ridiculed. They ought not be in any way given the kind of treatment that this young lady was given… To castigate her, to characterize her, to stereotype her, and use all kind of attacks, I think, is something that does an injustice to the criminal justice system.”

The defense lawyer who opened the George Zimmerman murder trial with a knock-knock joke has found himself in a sticky situation Friday after apparently taking a “selfie” photo was his daughtersRachel and Molly West that was later posted to Instagram. 

Don West appears in a photo on the account of someone with the user name “mollywestttt” with the caption “We beat stupidity celebration cones … #zimmerman #defense #dadkilledit.” The implication is that West and his daughter were celebrating week one of the trial with ice cream cones.

ABC’s Miami affiliate Local 10 has been on the case, using their dedicated Zimmerman Twitter account to give updates on the unusual photo. The station indicated that West would likely issue a statement on the photo but as of Friday evening, that had not happened. 

They did point out that the tie in the Instagram photo matches the one West wore on the first day of the trial, Monday.

i know the sequester prevents the jury from seeing this obnoxiousness, this guy is trying to taint the reputation of a murdered 17year old when his daughters character IMO is questionable, he has no control or respect from her to make such a jackass move while he is in the middle of a trial.

Along with the knock-knock joke, for which West later apologized, the photo appears to be another example of the defense attorney’s tendency to make light of a trial that most of the people involved seem to be taking very seriously. Is another apology on the way?

UPDATE (7:35pm ET): Zimmerman’s defense team spokesperson Shawn Vincent delivered the following statement on the photo to Local10.com:

“[West] was doing something he does almost every day, an old tradition with his daughters. They went out for ice cream. Don had no idea that she’d post it on Instagram… The girls like to make fun of their dad frequently.”

West delivered his own statement, which simply read: “As a parent, we’re not always proud of things our children do, but we love them anyway, and then we move on.”

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and Whip John Cornyn (R-Texas) warned six professional sports leagues on Friday not to promote ObamaCare or partner with the Obama administration on efforts concerning the law.

In letters to the leagues released Friday, McConnell and Cornyn cited an announcement by federal Health Secretary Kathleen Sebelius that she is in talks with the NFL, the NBA and others about campaigns to educate the public about healthcare reform. 

McConnell and Cornyn warned NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and his peers that launching such campaigns would damage their leagues' reputations. 

 "It is difficult for us to remember another occasion when [a] major sports league took public sides in such a highly polarized public debate," the lawmakers wrote.

McConnell and Cornyn also warned the leagues not to follow the precedent of the Boston Red Sox, which promoted the Massachusetts healthcare overhaul. 

The state reform was passed on a bipartisan basis, the lawmakers argued, while the federal one was not.

The leader of the Senate Conservatives Fund emailed supporters on Friday promising to back primary challenges against three Republican incumbents who voted for the Senate immigration bill that passed the chamber Thursday.

“There are three incumbents up next year who supported the amnesty bill,” SCF Executive Director Matt Hoskins wrote, calling out Sens. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, Lamar Alexander or Tennessee, and Susan Collins of Maine. “If strong, conservative challengers emerge in these races, we will support them.”

Senate Conservatives Fund is a tea-party aligned group that was founded by former Sen. Jim DeMint. The South Carolina Republican is no longer with the group. Graham, a member of the bipartisan “gang of eight” that drafted the underlying immigration overhaul, indicated in a Thursday Senate floor speech that he knew his position on immigration might create primary problems for him.

“I have never been more proud to be involved in an issue than I have trying to fix illegal immigration because it is a national security threat, it is an economic threat, and it is a cultural threat,” Graham said.

“As to my politics, I am doing great among Hispanics in South Carolina. The bad news is that there are not very many who vote in the Republican primary,” he added.

Civil liberties advocates in Congress introduced a slew of bills in response to reports that the NSA has been collecting phone records from millions of Americans andmining electronic communications from nine major Internet companies:

• Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) proposed legislation would require the federal government to have a warrant based on probable cause in order to seize phone records from Americans;
Sens. Mark Udall (D-Colo.) and Ron Wyden (D-Ore.), who long warned of the government's surveillance methods, are seeking to limit the government's authority to collect data;
Unusual bedfellows Sens. Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.) and Mike Lee (R-Utah) co-sponsored a bill that would declassify FISA court opinions;
And this week, Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) introduced legislation to revisit the Patriot Act Section 215 and FISA Amendment Act Section 702, under which the NSA programs are lawful.

But the one thing they lack is a timeline for when, or if, anything will actually get done. While the need to address the scope of the NSA programs has been raised in Judiciary committee hearings held by Leahy, none of the bills aimed at doing that has progressed beyond picking up a few cosponsors.

The United States is one of the only industrialized nations that doesn't mandate paid sick leave. These guys want to keep it that way.

Before jetting off last week for a trade mission at the Paris Air Show, Florida Gov. Rick Scott took a moment to sign into law a bill that banned local governments from requiring employers to offer paid sick leave. 
The restaurant industry and Florida's big theme parks lobbied hard for the passage of the legislation, which blocked local efforts to give low-wage workers a basic benefit that's standard in virtually every industrialized country in the world except the United States.

 The Florida law is the most recent in a series of victories by low-wage industries that, with the aid of Republican-led state legislatures, have succeeded in derailing or overriding measures providing this benefit to workers. Working behind the scenes in this campaign is a familiar foe of employee rights, the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC), whose membership includes a range of major corporations and industry groups. The corporate-funded organization's model "preemption" legislation—disallowing municipalities from enacting their own paid leave laws—have been introduced by state legislators around the country.

The paid sick leave push is the long-awaited sequel to the federal effort for passage of the Family and Medical Leave Act in the early 1990s. The law allows workers to take up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave after the birth of a child or to care for a sick family member without worrying about getting fired. At the forefront of the paid sick leave campaign are a host of local and national women's groups that, with labor unions, were also at the vanguard of the FMLA fight.

Paid sick leave is a key women's issue, since women are increasingly the primary breadwinners for many families, and still the primary caregivers for children. They "are overwhelmingly responsible for taking a kid to the doctor," points out Vicki Shabo, the director of work and family programs at the National Partnership for Women and Families, so the inability to take paid sick leave affects them disproportionately.

President Obama Just Got His Recess Appointments Power Back

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid’s (D-NV) office tells ThinkProgress that the Senate is now adjourned until Monday, July 8, with no “pro forma” sessions planned during the coming week. This is significant because these pro forma sessions, sham sessions where a single senator briefly gavels the Senate into session for a few minutes, are a legally controversial method the Senate uses to cut off the president’s recess appointment power. Without these sham sessions, President Obama’s power to recess appoint several officials currently being filibustered by Senate Republicans likely just roared back to life.

Admittedly, an unusually conservative panel of the conservative United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit held earlier this year that the president’s recess power does not exist unless it is invoked during a very brief period that occurs once ever two years, among other things. This widely criticized opinion, however, is unlikely to be upheld by the Supreme Court because it would require the justices to retroactively invalidate literally hundreds of recess appointments in just the last several presidencies.

Significantly, while the Supreme Court agreed to review the D.C. Circuit’s decision, it asked the parties to brief an additional question that the lower court did not decide in its sweeping opinion — “[w]hether the President’s recess-appointment power may be exercised when the Senate is convening every three days in pro forma sessions.” This is a strong indication that the justices may be willing to uphold the power of pro forma sessions to nix the recess appointments power, but they are not willing to cast the past actions of hundreds of former government officials in doubt.

Currently, several of President Obama’s recess appointments are in limbo. These include several members of the National Labor Relations Board, and Richard Cordray, Director of Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Both of these agencies presently cannot operate without these appointees in place, so if the Supreme Court ultimately declares these appointments invalid, it could retroactively invalidate everything they have done in office. Worse, because the NLRB has exclusive authority over much of federal labor law, a Court decision striking Obama’s recess appointments to this agency could effectively eliminate most of the legal protections for workers’ right to organize. As we previously explained, without Obama’s appointees to the NLRB,

[T]here will be no one to enforce workers’ rights to join a union without intimidation from their employer. No one to enforce workers’ rights to join together to oppose abusive work conditions. And no one to make an employer actually bargain with a union. Without an NLRB to enforce the law, it may be possible for an employer to round up all of their pro-union workers, fire them, and then replace them with anti-union scabs who will immediately call a vote to decertify the union.

Chinese wind-turbine firm charged with stealing US trade secrets

China's largest wind-turbine company has been charged with stealing trade secrets from its American former software supplier, the US justice department has announced.

Sinovel Wind Group and two of its executives were indicted in a federal court in Madison, Wisconsin, on Thursday. A former employee of the Massachusetts-based American Superconductor (AMSC) pleaded guilty in Klagenfurt, Austria, to stealing a source code for turbine controllers.

The trio are charged with stealing software developed in the US by downloading it from an AMSC computer in Middleton, Wisconsin, to a computer in Austria.

AMSC, which claimed the stolen software was used in four Sinovel turbines installed in Massachusetts, called for the Obama administration and Congress to re-evaluate the US trade relationship with China.

Daniel McGahn, the company's president, said: "The fact that Sinovel has exported stolen American intellectual property from China back into theUnited States, less than 40 miles from our global headquarters, shows not only a blatant disrespect for intellectual property but a disregard for international trade law." More than 500 AMSC employees worldwide lost their jobs as a result of the theft, he added.

House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, has been saying for months it's up to the Senate to get the ball rolling on a major overhaul of the nation's immigration system.

When that happens, he said, the House will take a look.

But as Senate Majority Harry Reid, D-Nev., laid out the path forward for next month's Senate debate on a comprehensive bill that seems to have wide support, Boehner cautioned that his chamber won't just accept that measure, no matter how bipartisan.

Boehner issued a statement Thursday signed by the members of his leadership team and Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte, R-Va., that takes a new approach and suggests Republicans want more ownership of the issue. Whether that will derail the fragile agreement forged across the rotunda remains unclear.

"While we applaud the progress made by our Senate colleagues, there are numerous ways in which the House will approach the issue differently," they said. "The House remains committed to fixing our broken immigration system, but we will not simply take up and accept the bill that is emerging in the Senate if it passes. Rather, through regular order, the House will work its will and produce its own legislation."

Today could be one of the hottest days ever recorded on Earth, as the western U.S. falls into the grips of a dangerous heat wave.

A strong high-pressure system settling over the region on Friday and through the weekend will bring extreme temperatures.

The mercury may hit 130 degrees F. in Death Valley, Calif. (The all-time high is 134 degrees.)

The National Weather Service is calling for 118 in Phoenix, and 117 in Las Vegas on Sunday — a mark reached only twice in Sin City.

Airlines are monitoring the soaring temperatures to make sure it's safe to fly.

Temperatures are expected to soar even as far north as Reno, Nev., across Utah and into parts of Wyoming and Idaho, where forecasters are calling for triple-digit heat in the Boise area through the weekend.

The military's former No. 2 officer is being investigated for his alleged involvement in leaking information about a secretive government program to wage cyber warfare against the Iranian nuclear program, according to media reports.

NBC and the Washington Post report retired Marine Gen. James "Hoss" Cartwright is the target of a Justice Department probe into allegations that he released information about "Olympic Games," a cyber operation started under President George W. Bush and continued by President Barack Obama to infect Iranian centrifuges with a virus known as Stuxnet.

The investigation is a continuation of the Obama administration's crackdown on classified leaks within the government, including against the New York Times and theAssociated Press, which first reported the cyber program.

Cartwright, 63, served as a career aviator after receiving his commission in 1971. He was deputy commander of the Marine Forces Atlantic, commander of the First Marine Aircraft wing and commander of U.S. Strategic Command before assuming his position as vice chairman in 2007. He retired in 2011 and is currently the Harold Brown chair in Defense Policy Studies at the D.C.-based Center for Strategic and International Studies.

Company allegedly misled government about security clearance checks

Federal investigators have told lawmakers they have evidence that USIS, the contractor that screened Edward Snowden for his top-secret clearance, repeatedly misled the government about the thoroughness of its background checks, according to people familiar with the matter.

The alleged transgressions are so serious that a federal watchdog indicated he plans to recommend that the Office of Personnel Management, which oversees most background checks, end ties with USIS unless it can show it is performing responsibly, the people said.

Cutting off USIS could present a major logistical quagmire for the nation’s already-jammed security clearance process. Rand Paul 'pushing hard' with House

Sen. Rand Paul is not pleased with the passing of the immigration reform bill in the Senate, but he hasn’t given up hope that conservatives will get what they want out of the bill yet, as he plans to rally the House.

“I’m pushing hard with a lot of conservatives in the House to include congressional votes saying the border is secure. This, to me, is more important than even the number of border agents is that Congress votes we don’t leave it up to the president,” Paul, who voted ‘nay’ on the bill, said on Fox News on Thursday just minutes after the bill was passed.

His concern lies especially in the fact that the current bill in the Senate gives the president the power to veto certain amendments added, and might dismiss the fact that a secure border is necessary, since Obama has said before that the border is secure enough. The Kentucky Republican has been a staunch supporter of securing the border first before tackling the undocumented immigrants currently in the country.

what the resident republican radical women hating bigot is concerned about is not having the ability to slam Hispanics and keeping their potential progressive vote out of politics, and out of this country.

“I want Congress to make the decision. The president already says the border is secure currently so that’s why I have a little bit of mistrust over the president making the decision,” he added.

Despite Paul’s disappointment in his colleagues in the passing of the bill, he seems to hold no grudge against the big-name Republicans who voted ‘yea,’ such as Florida Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.).

“I think [Rubio’s] well-intentioned and I think he’s trying to do the right thing and so I don’t impute to him ill motives. I think his motives are genuine, he wants to do what a lot of us want to do and that’s fix the illegal immigration problem. I disagree with the final bill, but I think good people can honestly have disagreements,” he said.

i'm surprised his teeth didn't fall out of his mouth with that whopper, Rubio is a potential opponent we saw what they did to each other 2012 those guys weren't half as radical as these guys, i'm expecting that stage to be lit up like a Christmas tree o 4th of July.
