House Speaker John Boehner on Thursday released details of his highly anticipated proposed lawsuit against President Obama. It turns out that he wants to take the president to court not on broad grounds of thwarting Congress on many issues, but on the narrow point that Mr. Obama delayed the employer mandate of the Affordable Care Act (ACA).

That’s right. Speaker Boehner wants to sue Obama for not quickly requiring that medium and large US businesses offer health insurance to their employees, as called for under Obamacare. The president, on his own authority, put off enforcing this provision until 2015.

The House itself voted last year to delay the employer mandate, though the Senate never took that legislation up.

Maureen Taylor is the hero of the day. She did not allow an obvious shill of the establishment, a shill of the plutocracy, to lead the narrative. Reporter Hank Winchester’s bias was immediately obvious to those who understand the narrative he was hoping to get across.

Detroit has taken much flak for their inhumane decision to disconnect water in mass to its citizens. Most of them are poor and disabled in a failing city. Detroit is one of those cities that corporations abandoned after extracting most of the human capital from its soul. Those that are ultimately responsible for the decay of the city moved on to scavenge other cities and countries.

Winchester’s narrative is simple. It is always easy to attack the poor, the minorities, the others. It is easy to make it all their fault all of the time. “Some of these people have a desperate need,” reporter Hank Winchester said. “They need help from state agencies. ... But there are other people, and this is where it gets controversial, who simply don’t want to pay the water bill, who’d rather spend money on cable.”

Winchester then pivots into a defense of the water department stating that they want to work with people. Did he do his journalistic duty to find out if actual citizens received that message? Is it even true?

Taylor would have none of it. Though she did not say it, she understands that black, brown, and poor communities are often maligned by the supposedly fair and balanced media. A few stereotypes from these communities are generally projected on the whole. As such, America generally gets a poor impression of these communities that is then reflected as a lack of empathy from otherwise good, decent people.

“Before I answer that let me say, shame on Hank, shame on him,” Taylor said, “for putting that lie and that mis and that disinformation out on the air. To suggest that people don’t want to pay for a water bill is scandalous. What is at stake here is that there are tens of thousands of low income families who cannot pay rising water bill costs. The cost of living is going up. The chances of living is going down. And we’ve got these reporters out here, like this guy, that’s just standing on the side of the people that have money.”

Taylor then brought up all the corporations that have owed tens of thousands and hundreds of thousands whose water was not shutoff. Somehow the payment delinquency of the rich and affluent is different than the generally forced payment delinquency of the poor.

 Taylor's final statement in the interview was epic and bold. “The next time you invite me to be here, let’s have some truth and a fair exchange as opposed to Hank who doesn’t know what the hell he’s talking about. Gobble up all the time. I’ll talk to you late

 In April, the city set a target of cutting service to 3,000 customers a week who were more than $150 behind on their bills. In May, the water department sent out 46,000 warnings and cut off service to 4,531. The city says that cutting off water is the only way to get people to pay their bills as Detroit tries to emerge from bankruptcy — the utility is currently owed $90 million from customers, and nearly half the city's 300,000 or so accounts are past due."

Monday afternoon, the Senate confirmed the nomination of Cheryl Ann Krause for the Third Circuit, unanimously. But that was after Republicans forced hours of wasted "debate" time to lapse before voting. That makes 23 blocked votes on nominees the Senate had to wait on, who were eventually confirmed unanimously.

Majority Leader Harry Reid is getting fed up with it and vented on the floor Monday, issuing another threat to reform the rules.

He launched a broadside on the GOP's ongoing efforts to "put up roadblock after roadblock" in the confirmation of nominees. Republicans have used up maximum debate time for most nominees to delay a final confirmation vote, even those who are ultimately confirmed with broad or unanimous support.

"We changed some of the rules. We didn't change that," Reid said of the Senate's November rules change that required a simple majority to confirm all nominees except the Supreme Court. "If they're going to continue this, maybe we'll have to take another look at that. Just, it's outrageous what they've done."

What he has in mind is forcing Republicans to use the debate time—30 hours of debate on cabinet and circuit judge nominations and eight hours on sub-cabinet nominations—to actually debate the nominations. And if they don't show up on the floor to use that time, they lose it.

There are 145 nominations that have been passed by committees and are ready for floor action. At the pace the Republicans are forcing, they can't possibly be completed before November's election. Which is all part of Mitch McConnell's plan. It's time to take this tool for Senate self-destruction away from him.

Temp workers face enormously elevated danger in the workplace, as a running investigatory series by ProPublica in collaboration with Univision shows. Those dangers are in addition to the low wages and unstable employment of temp work—it's a total package of exploitation. Now, a new story in the series shows how weak enforcement and penalties are even when workers are killed.
In states across the country, temp workers are dramatically more likely to be injured on the job—50 percent more in California and Florida, 72 percent more in Minnesota. In at least four states, temp workers are three times more likely to suffer amputations than permanent employees. Numbers like that are the product of reckless disregard by employers. Disregard like this: In 2013, a temp named Janio Salinas was buried alive in sugar in a Pennsylvania warehouse staffed entirely by temps, up to and including the warehouse manager. This was not an innocent accident:

The warehouse manager told OSHA that he had complained repeatedly to upper management about the dangers of becoming engulfed while unclogging the sugar hopper. He said he had asked the plant manager for a safety device to prevent clogging, but the plant manager said "we can't do that" because of financial constraints.
A screen that OSHA said would have prevented workers from falling into the sugar hopper was removed 13 days before Salinas’ accident.
Eventually, the company decided to install a screen over the hopper to prevent clogging. But 13 days before the accident, according to OSHA, the plant manager ordered it removed because it was slowing down production.

Exclusive: Iraq tells U.N. that 'terrorist groups' seized nuclear materials

(Reuters) - Insurgents in Iraq have seized nuclear materials used for scientific research at a university in the country's north, Iraq told the United Nations in a letter appealing for help to "stave off the threat of their use by terrorists in Iraq or abroad."

Nearly 40 kilograms (88 pounds) of uranium compounds were kept at Mosul University, Iraq's U.N. Ambassador Mohamed Ali Alhakim told U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in the July 8 letter obtained by Reuters on Wednesday.

"Terrorist groups have seized control of nuclear material at the sites that came out of the control of the state," Alhakim wrote, adding that such materials "can be used in manufacturing weapons of mass destruction."

"These nuclear materials, despite the limited amounts mentioned, can enable terrorist groups, with the availability of the required expertise, to use it separate or in combination with other materials in its terrorist acts," said Alhakim.

He warned that they could also be smuggled out of Iraq.

A U.S. government source familiar with the matter said the materials were not believed to be enriched uranium and therefore would be difficult to use to manufacture into a weapon. Another U.S. official familiar with security matters said he was unaware of this development raising any alarm among U.S. authorities.

A Russian Orthodox Priest has claimed that the World Cup is an abomination because players wear brightly-coloured shoes.

Writing in his column on Russian People’s Line, Priest Alexander Shumsky claimed that players are promoting a “gay rainbow” by wearing green, pink, yellow and blue shoes.

He said: “Wearing pink or blue shoes, [the players] might as well wear women’s panties or a bra.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid is promising quick action to reverse the Hobby Lobby decision to allow private-sector companies to deny contraceptive coverage to their employees.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said Monday that Democrats will take up legislation in the “coming weeks” to address last month’s Supreme Court decision that allowed some employers with religious objections to opt out of Obamacare’s contraception mandate. […] “We’re going to do something about the Hobby Lobby legislation,” Reid said on the Senate floor Monday as he ticked off the Senate’s to-do list over the next several weeks.

 The "something" they can do is as of yet unclear. It could be amending the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, the law underpinning the court's decision, to clarify that those rights are intended just for actual, individual humans and not corporations. There are also potential actions to find a work around within Obamacare to cover those employees the court would leave out.

Any of those actions won't solve the problem, at least in the short term, because Senate Republicans will probably block any legislation fixing this, and if they don't manage to stop it, the Republican House wouldn't take it up anyway. But action is necessary, and that action—and the inevitable Republican blocking of it—is something Democrats can point to between now and November's elections.

House Republicans claim that the nation can’t afford to spend money, but they are about to waste 3.3 million taxpayer dollars on their special Benghazi investigation.

House Republicans are planning to spend as much as $3.3 million for this year’s operations of the special committee they created in May to investigate the September 2012 Benghazi attacks, a bigger budget than the House Veterans Affairs and Ethics Committees were given this year.

According to a committee document provided by Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi’s office, House Republicans want a $3.3 million budget for this year’s operations of the 12-member select committee on the Benghazi attacks. As with most congressional committees, the document indicates the majority party gets the bigger share of the resources for the panel; the budget provides just under $2.2 million for Republicans and just over $1 million for Democrats on the committee. There are seven GOP lawmakers and five Democrats serving on the committee, and it is expected to have a staff of 30.

By comparison, the House committee on Veterans Affairs — which has has a roster of 25 lawmakers and about 27 staff members — spent just $2.5 million in 2013 and has a $3 million budget for 2014. The Ethics Committee budget for 2014 was just over $3 million, with a staff of about 25 serving 10 lawmakers.

House Republicans will almost certainly end up wasting millions more taxpayer dollars if they follow through with their plan to sue President Obama. They have also wasted millions of dollars investigating the IRS. All three of these expenditures have a common goal. They are designed to get House Republicans elected in November.

Speaker Boehner’s select committee on Benghazi will be the seventh congressional investigation of the attack in the last two years. The country doesn’t need another Benghazi investigation.

You may have seen the video of the Indiana cop shoving a paraplegic, tipping him over from the curb onto the street. That was bad enough.

You may even have already seen the video of the incident alluded to in the title, where a California Highway Patrolman mercilessly beats a woman by the side of the freeway, which came out about the same time. Here it is if you haven't.

But what we didn't know until now was much of anything about the woman. It's coming out bit by bit in the Los Angeles Times, and I think we can honestly say CHP has stooped to a new low.

"She's not just some animal," said attorney Caree Harper, who declined to name the woman. "She has an aunt, a sister, a brother, a father and a great-grandchild." ...
The woman is being housed at a mental health facility at Martin Luther King Jr. Community Hospital in South Los Angeles and doctors are not allowing the family to see her, Harper said.

The woman seems to have been found walking in traffic by the CHP officer who then began beating her repeatedly, swinging his fists into her head. CHP claims, almost miraculously, that she was not hurt. I have my doubts, but here's the quote:

CHP officials told reporters at a Friday news conference that she was not injured and that she was undergoing a mental health evaluation.

how can she not have sustained any damage as far as mental health evaluation, take another look at that video and see why a grown man beat her senseless with no resistance continually his buddy did nothing to stop him, I see Rodney King all over again.  this cop is obviously sick and a dangerous menace to society.  Black people aren't a menace to society, society is a menace to Black people.

With nearly 1.4 million jobs created so far in 2014, we're in the middle of the strongest start to job growth since the 1999, when Bill Clinton was president and nearly 1.5 million jobs were created in the first half of the year.

We learned this earlier today with the release of the June jobs report, and at the risk of sounding like an optimist, I'd have to say that's pretty good news. Well, good new unless you're Republican National Committee chairman Reince Priebus, who took 40 minutes to come up with this sad sack response:

Linda Drain is being torn apart from her husband in a marriage that has lasted 33 years. She and her husband, Larry Drain, separated, so she could keep her health insurance. Linda needs insurance because she suffers from epilepsy. Linda Drain has epilepsy and has suffered so many seizures she has damaged the nerves in her back.

Linda has spinal stenosis, a condition aggravated by the titanium in her back. She’s even undergone brain surgery to alleviate the seizures, but she still has to take expensive medications in order to prevent them. Her husband has his own health issues to deal with.  He’s now living alone in the small apartment the couple once shared. He has no insurance and hopes the hernia he can’t afford surgery for won’t cause a bowel obstruction.

Six months into the full implementation of the Affordable Care Act, the Drains are among 162,000 Tennesseans who got caught in a coverage gap. Their household income is too little to qualify for a government subsidy to buy health insurance, and they live in a state not expanding Medicaid.

Their predicament was caused by a series of legal, political and bureaucratic decisions that included the U.S. Supreme Court striking down part of the federal health law, but Larry Drain said he feels to blame.

“In September of last year, I made what looking back on it in retrospect was the worst decision I ever made in my entire life,” he said. “I decided to take early retirement from Social Security.”

Even though his monthly benefit was significantly less than the paycheck he had been bringing home, the decision changed the eligibility requirements for Linda Drain to continue receiving Supplemental Security Income. If she kept living with her husband, she would lose SSI eligibility, which would make her no longer qualify for TennCare…

Had Tennessee expanded its Medicaid program, they both would have been eligible for coverage.

would it be more humane to bash Pres. that's a given and expand Medicaid taking credit for saving people like this couple from ObamaCares, but no they chose to completely destroy the couple and you know they are not the only ones blind to it or give a damn about them I'm going for the latter.

rather than take solace in bashing half the plan they refuse because expansion is part of the plan meanwhile Tennesseans suffer like Floridians under Jindal's refusal and the other republican states that leave their constituents swinging in the breeze with no health care oh sorry wrong there is the old stand by the ER.

Obamacare was supposed to protect people like the Drains, but Republicans whittled away at the Affordable Care Act until we had a mere shadow on what we once wanted for this country. Obama’s mandate was attacked out of spite and now the Reddest states will suffer for it.

Republican Jack Kingston’s campaign attacked runoff opponent David Perdue Tuesday afternoon over comments he made in a meeting with the Macon Telegraph editorial board — back in mid-May, before the primary. The six-week-old statement about America’s view of the world was overshadowed by Perdue’s gaffe that “increasing revenue” is necessary to balance the budget. Kingston’s release notes that Perdue said during the interview: “We see the world through the ugly American’s eyes.” After a questioner says Americans are the “arrogant teenagers” of the world, Perdue responded with, “Absolutely” and added later, “The rest of the world gets it.”

The one gaffe about saying the truth about the world resenting heavy-handed and hypocritical Americans is overshadowed by his gaffe reciting simple arithmetic—that you can't balance the budget on cuts alone.

they all know the truth that's why every so often one of them slips and let's it out the bag, what it does is shows other lock stepped statements collective lies by the party, that is why those who do are immediately ostracized and they hope it does get to much attention, but this is that time of the voting years that all cracks make it to the top of the "listen at what stupid said" list.

There's a predictable but bizarre reaction from Republicans with penises (and a few without) to the backlash against the Supreme Court's Hobby Lobby decision: only sluts and whores use birth control. The obvious conclusion is that these guys aren't getting much in the way of action if they don't think women should get to have sex for fun. Or they're only getting it when they pay for it.

"I was in the drugstore the other day, and guess what? There’s a whole section of birth control. Go buy it!" he said. "You can get a condom in a New York bar for free. As a matter of fact, you can take a handful."

statements like this prompted my previous response they lay it at the feet of the women, with no responsibility for men yet they are out their closing birth control clinics , denying workplace contraception, putting your boss between you and your Dr., no pre natal without the money and no help after birth money or not, the hypocrisy drips from their lips.  in their right wing flippant way they expose themselves as the indifferent "not my problem" party of stupider than thou.  and I again admonish women on the right wing that defend this ideology/ideology with smiles on their face spewing the ugliness.
