Just how stupid does Mitch McConnell think women are? Judging by his new ‘Women For Team Mitch’ campaign, the answer is ‘plenty.’

McConnell’s new pitch for the vote of Kentucky women — in his bid for re-election to the Senate — is so full of lies and distortions, he must think his constituents never pick up a scrap of news. Or perhaps he thinks most women are gullible and easy prey for manipulation by a ‘charming’ Southern politician. In any case, the move shows how desperate he is to combat the threat fromDemocratic candidate Alison Lundergan Grimes. 

On Friday, at the rollout of ‘Women For Team Mitch’, the Senator’s campaign issued a press release that quotes a supporter as saying:

Mitch was the co-sponsor of the original Violence Against Women Act — and continues to advocate for stronger policies to protect women.

Oh, really? Well, he was, indeed, a co-sponsor of the original VAWA back in 1991, when it died in committee. However, he withdrew his support by 1993, voting against it in 1994, 2012, and 2013. McConnell has taken to insisting that he voted against the bill because it wasn’t strong enough — an odd position, considering that all of the female Republican senators thought otherwise and voted for it.

The media-savvy campaign of Alison Lundergan Grimes, which has been hammering McConnell on women’s issues, stayed out in front of him as his Friday event grew near. A couple of days beforehand, the campaign sent an email to The Hill  that said:

Senator McConnell’s refusal to stand up for women on key issues of economic security is shameful. From voting against the Paycheck Fairness Act and the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, to blocking the Violence Against Women Act, McConnell has failed to lead on issues important to women and their families. Kentuckians know there is one candidate on their side: Alison Lundergan Grimes.

PA Sheriff Posts Video Targeting Town Council Members By Name; Council Votes For Indefinite Suspension (VIDEO)

On August 26th, 2013, just four days prior to the day that Gilberton Pennsylvania Police Chief Mark Kessler was scheduled to complete his suspension, Kessler posted a new video online, which has since led to accusations of threatening public officials. 

Gilberton Police Chief Kessler was originally suspended near the end of July for videos posted online which show him firing an assault weapon and calling for the killing of “libtards.” In one video, Kessler is seen firing his assault weapon into a paper target, which he clearly states is US Secretary of State John Kerry. 

In another, he states the target represents Democratic Representative and House Minority Leader, Nancy Pelosi. Kessler received a thirty day suspension for using Gilberton Borough Property in those earlier videos, without authority or permission. The assault weapon which Kessler brandished and fired in the videos belongs to the Gilberton Police Department.

In the new video Kessler shows off his two “new targets.” The first one he names “Eric.” Holding up a target with an evil clown face printed on the front, he states that Eric is a “libtard” who likes to “strong arm” and “threaten” people. Kessler then says that “Eric” is going to meet a friend of his today. He proceeds to bring out his assault weapon, saying that it has “been all over the world” and “taken many lives.”

Later in the video Kessler says

“So I am going to take Eric out into the field over there and he’s going to be ranting and raving and carrying on… This is my target, Eric.”

Kessler holds up the evil clown faced target at this point.

There are only two conclusions to be drawn from this part of the video. 1. Kessler believes that a paper target has the ability to rant and rave and carry on – and thus should be terminated from his job as Chief of Police for mental health reasons or 2. Kessler is not referring to a paper target, when he says he is going to take “Eric” out into the field to meet his friend, the assault weapon.

The Vice-President of Gilberton Borough is a gentleman by the name of Eric Boxer. Kessler has stated on numerous occasions that he blames Boxer for his suspension.

This week marked the 50th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s historic "I have a dream" speech on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington. How far has the country progressed since that iconic speech?

While there has undoubtedly been progress toward his dream, we are still far from achieving it. There is a dangerous sort of hatred that still exists in the country. 

FBI agents recently arrested Richard Schmidt, 47, a suspected Ohio white supremacist with a felony conviction for manslaughter on charges of marketing counterfeit goods from China. What they discovered, however, was more than just low-quality NFL jerseys. 

The agents who searched Schmidt's sporting goods store, Spindletop Sports Zone, and four trailers full with a cache of weapons that included AR-15 assault rifles, Ruger and Sig Sauer semi-automatic pistols, bulletproof body armor, high-capacity magazines and ammunition. They also found evidence of Schmidt's ties to the neo-Nazi movement and seized a video of a national convention of the neo-Nazi National Socialist movement, bumper stickers of the National Alliance party (another neo-Nazi group), paraphernalia from the "Waffen SS," Adolph Hitler's Nazi military force in Germany, and a frightening "Jewish 500" list with the names of Jewish and NAACP leaders in Detroit. 

One page even included the name of Scott Kaufman, the chief executive officer of the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit, who was stunned when federal agents showed up at his office.

As a convicted felon, Schmidt is prohibited under federal law from buying firearms. He was charged with murder and felonious assault in 1989 after killing a Hispanic man and shooting two others with a semi-automatic pistol in a traffic dispute. After serving 13 years in prison, Schmidt returned to Toledo in 2003 and formed a nonprofit called the "Vinland Preservation League" to push environmental and historical preservation.

According to Mark Potok from the Southern Poverty Law Center, an organization that tracks hate groups around the country, the group found an entry that appeared to be from Schmidt on a neo-Nazi website a few years ago under the Yahoo profile "Vinalander 101" who declared his plans to set up a "historical preservation" group. Potok also noted that the word "Vinland" likely came from the "Vinland Social Club," a dormant neo-Nazi skinhead group.

Georgia Insurance Commissioner Ralph Hudgens (R) boasted to a crowd of Republicans that his office is creating bureaucratic hurdles to slow down and derail the implementation of the Affordable Care Act, also known as “Obamacare.” 

Atlanta Journal-Constitution columnist Jay Bookman reported that earlier this month, Hudgens boasted to an audience of Republicans in Floyd County, “Let me tell you what we’re doing (about Obamacare). Everything in our power to be an obstructionist.”

Activist Bryan Long of the group Better Georgia told Raw Story, “I have nothing more to say than to point out Ralph’s own words, that he and the governor are obstructionists on Obamacare and that’s the role they’ve chosen. Hopefully people in Georgia will realize that this is one more way that our insurance commissioner and our governor are doing everything they can to obstruct the law and to keep health insurance from most Georgia residents.”

“It’s sad,” he said.

In Floyd County, a grinning Hudgens allowed the waves of applause and cries of “Amen!” to wash over him as he detailed one of the ways his office is sabotaging the plan to bring affordable health coverage to the 19.7 percent of people who are currently uninsured among Georgia’s population of 9.92 million. Georgia had the fifth highest percentage of uninsured citizens in the country as of 2012.

Hudgens’ plan targets the Affordable Care Act’s provision that calls for “navigators” to be hired by organizations to help people shop for policies on the open market. The government is offering training programs and grants to help create the positions.

“We have passed a law that says that a navigator, which is a position in that exchange, has to be licensed by our Department of Insurance,” Hudgens told the audience. “The ObamaCare law says that we cannot require them to be an insurance agent, so we said fine, we’ll just require them to be a licensed navigator. So we’re going to make up the test, and basically you take the insurance agent test, you erase the name, you write ‘navigator test’ on it.”

More SLC airline passengers caught with guns

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Salt Lake City International Airport has become a hot spot this year for gun-toting passengers.

In May, Transportation Security Administration screeners discovered a loaded gun strapped to a man's prosthetic leg. In July, they found two guns on the same day — both loaded. Earlier this week, they sniffed out yet another loaded gun in the carry-on bag of a man headed to Las Vegas.

The latest discovery brings the year-to-date total to 30. That is already significantly more than any of the previous three years — and more than double the number found this year in six airports with comparable volumes of passenger traffic such as Portland, St. Louis and Kansas City, TSA figures show. In Portland, for instance, only 13 guns have been found; eight in Kansas City.

The increase in Salt Lake City mirrors a national trend.

The number of guns found nationally by airport screeners has more than doubled in the past eight years — from 660 in 2005 to 1,556 in 2012.

TSA officials decline to speculate about the reasons behind the increase, but say the most common excuse from passengers is that they simply forgot they had a gun in their bag.

The government doesn't track what happens to the people who are arrested.

The TSA can also issue civil fines ranging from $200 up to $11,000 dollars, said TSA spokeswoman Lorie Dankers. In 2012, the agency issued $1.8 million in fines to passengers caught with guns.

Airports in the South and the West, where the American gun culture is strongest, had the greatest number of guns intercepted last year, according to TSA data. Five of the 12 airports with the most guns were in Texas, and others included airports in Atlanta, Denver and Seattle.

John McCain: England 'No Longer a World Power'

Appearing on the Tonight Show Friday night, Arizona Senator John McCain lamented the decline in Great Britain’s geopolitical muscle, especially given what he called the neutrality of the United Nations in response to chemical weapon attacks in Syria.

“I feel badly about the British,” he told host Jay Leno. “They’re our dear friends, but they’re no longer a world power. It’s just a fact of life.”

On Thursday, England’s House of Commons narrowly defeated a resolution approving the country’s intervention into Syria provided proof of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s use of chemical weapons, a sharp rebuke to Prime Minister David Cameron and President Barack Obama.

 McCain’s comment came in the context of a critique of the United Nations for what McCain considers a lackluster response to Syria’s aggression.

“The U.N. has turned into an organization that, in my estimation, in many ways is a waste of taxpayers’ dollars,” McCain said. “Right now, the U.N. is in there ascertaining whether this was a chemical attack.

And I think it’s fairly obvious, since you see these bodies stacked up with not a mark on them, and the head of the United Nations has said, ‘But, we won’t apportion blame.’ What? You’re not going to say who is responsible for it? That’s your tax dollars at work.”

“They want to be neutral,” he added. “They want to be neutral about everything.”

Public intellectual Cornel West tore into many of this week’s speeches surrounding the 50th anniversary of Martin Luther King, Jr.‘s “I Have a Dream” speech, accusing everyone from President Obama to Rev. Al Sharpton of “sanitizing” Dr. King’s vision.

“Brother Martin himself, I think, would’ve been turning over in his grave,” West said of the event. “[King would have wanted] people to talk about Wall Street criminality, he wants people to talk about war crimes, or drones dropping bombs on innocent people,” he asserted.

“Instead,” he lamented, “we saw the coronation of the bonafide house negro of the Barack Obama plantation, our dear brother Al Sharpton.” West went further declaring that Sharpton’s decline was “supported by [MSNBC analyst] Michael Dyson and others who’ve prostituted themselves in a very ugly and vicious way.”

West and Tavis Smiley both lamented that black leadership has become “so sold-out” so as not to have the courage to be a “bull in the china shop,” break rank, and talk about “racism, poverty, and militarism” at an otherwise “bought-out” event.
