Bill O'Reilly has repeatedly claimed he personally "heard" a shotgun blast that killed a figure in the investigation into President John F. Kennedy's assassination while reporting for a Dallas television station in 1977. O'Reilly's claim is implausible and contradicted by his former newsroom colleagues who denied the tale in interviews with Media Matters. A police report, contemporaneous reporting, and a congressional investigator who was probing Kennedy's death further undermine O'Reilly's story. 

George de Mohrenschildt was a Russian emigre who befriended Kennedy assassin Lee Harvey Oswald and testified before the Warren Commission investigating the Kennedy assassination. On March 29, 1977, the same day he was contacted by the House Select Committee on Assassinations, he committed suicide at his daughter's home in Florida. At the time, O'Reilly was a reporter for Dallas' WFAA-TV who regularly reported on stories related to the Kennedy assassination. 

O'Reilly has bizarrely inserted himself into de Mohrenschildt's story, claiming in books and on Fox News that he was outside the house seeking to interview de Mohrenschiltd at the time of his death. O'Reilly is under heavy criticism and scrutiny for his false claims about his 1982 Falklands War reporting. 

O'Reilly's implausible tale was first flagged by Jefferson Morley in a 2013 post for his website JFKFacts.org. Morley has worked as an editor for The Washington Post, Salon.com, and Arms Control Today, and is a visiting professor at the University of California, Washington Center.
New interviews with former O'Reilly colleagues who say he wasn't in Florida on the day of de Mohrenschildt's suicide and documents obtained by Media Matters bolster Morley's reporting.

In his 2012 best-selling non-fiction book Killing Kennedy, O'Reilly writes on page 300 that as a "reporter knocked on the door of de Mohrenschildt's daughter's home, he heard the shotgun blast that marked the suicide of the Russian ... that reporter's name is Bill O'Reilly."

O'Reilly repeated the tale for the Killing Kennedy audiobook.

Morley also obtained phone conversations between Fonzi and O'Reilly on March 29, 1977, from Fonzi's widow which the former Post editor says show that O'Reilly "certainly did not hear de Mohrenschildt's demise with his own ears. When the fatal shot rang out, O'Reilly was in his office at the WFAA studios in Dallas, Texas, more than 1,200 miles away. The confirmation comes from O'Reilly himself."

The Vatican took on “Big Pharma” last week, asking the international community to reform laws that allow drug companies to blindly pursue profits while keeping life-saving drugs out of the hands of poor people.

According to Vatican Radio, last Wednesday Archbishop Silvano M. Tomasi, the Permanent Observer of the Holy See to the United Nations, spoke at a UN Forum dedicated to making medicines more affordable and accessible for people in poorer nations. In his address, Tomasi argued that there are many obstacles that keep poor people from purchasing drugs, but called out one issue as particularly devastating: the abuse of intellectual property laws by pharmaceutical companies

“A major stumbling block in providing such access is found in restrictive applications and interpretations of intellectual property rights by many in the pharmaceutical industry,” Tomasi said, adding “[The current system] can lead to total disregard for those who cannot afford the price of certain medical products and allow an imbalanced free trade system, and thus constitute a virtual monopoly.”

The Archbishop also noted that most intellectual property systems only incentivize developing medications that accrue the biggest profits, which usually means companies spend the vast majority of their resources making drugs for people in wealthier nations. As such, businesses often fail to develop treatments for maladies common in poorer countries, such as tropical diseases, tuberculosis, malaria, hepatitis, and Ebola.

This ruthless pursuit of profits can even lead to epidemics. In January, health care advocates criticized drug companies Pfizer and GlaxoSmithKline for making vaccines too expensive for children in poor countries, and last November the World Health Organization (WHO) cited the pharmaceutical industry’s obsession with the bottom line as the primary reason for a delay in creating an Ebola vaccine: most Western pharmaceutical companies were slow to pursue a vaccine for the disease, WHO officials said, because the virus wasn’t prevalent outside of Central Africa.

sequestration definitely is the vehicle that kills programs and republicans have tried hard to blame them on the WH leaving them with no responsibility, but let's dig a little deeper.

But even if we assume that the idea did originate in the White House, we need to remember one more thing: The debt ceiling agreement that contained the sequestration cuts got significantly more Republican support than Democratic support.

In fact, 174 of 240 House Republicans voted for it, while just half of House Democrats joined them (95 out of 190 votes). In the Senate, Democrats carried the vote, providing 45 of the 74 "yes" votes, but Senate Republicans also supported it by a 28-19 margin.

So in total, more than 70 percent of congressional Republicans voted for the deal that included the sequester, while 58 percent of Democrats voted for it.

“On John Legend, I think he talked about voter ID and discrimination,” the Fox News correspondent continued. “I just want to fact check there, a lot of the states that passed voter ID laws, black voter participation has actually gone up. So, I don’t even think that’s true.”

Interior Department Will Provide Millions To Help Native Americans Adapt To Climate Change

The federal government is providing $8 million to help native communities in the U.S. plan for the impacts of climate change, Interior Secretary Sally Jewell announced Tuesday.

Half of the $8 million will go toward tribes’ general efforts to adapt to climate change, and half will go toward efforts focused specifically on coastal issues, such as sea level rise, erosion, and ocean acidification. Coastal issues are of particular concern to native communities in Alaska, where Jewell announced the new wave of funding.

“Sea level rise, coastal erosion, drought and more frequent and severe weather events are impacting Alaska Native villages and American Indian tribal communities across the nation,” Jewell said. “This funding can help tribes prepare and plan for climate-related events and build capacity to address these evolving challenges.”

Last year, the White House’s Climate Assessment singled out Alaskan native communities as some of the most vulnerable in the U.S. to climate change. The report noted that poverty among native groups can limit options for climate adaptation. That poverty makes moving difficult for tribes that need to migrate in order to escape rising seas or other climate impacts.

Native communities in other parts of the country are also feeling the impacts of climate change. Native Americans in the Southwest are subject to the same heat and severe droughts as the rest of the region’s residents, but Native Americans in particular have struggled with depleting water resources. Last October, the Environmental Protection Agency stated that 44 tribes in California were at risk of running out of water, and made $43 million available to Southwestern tribes who were weathering the drought. Most of the funding went toward less wealthy tribes who couldn’t afford to update their infrastructure to better deal with the drought and lack of water.

Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal (R) on Monday split with Republican Rudy Giuliani over the former New York City mayor’s remark that President Obama doesn’t love America. 

“I think the mayor should have used different words to express what he wanted to say,” Jindal said at a press conference with other Republican governors outside the White House on Monday. “I did not want to throw [Giuliani] under the bus…The president loves America. He loves our country. There is no doubt about that.”

Jindal’s defense of Obama comes a few days after his office released a statement with the headline, “Gov. Jindal refuses to condemn Mayor Giuliani.” 

In that statement, Jindal also said that Giuliani “should have chosen different phraseology for his remarks,” but he declined to say whether he shared the former New York City mayor’s views on Obama's love of the country.

“The level of the President’s love for our country is immaterial at this juncture,” Jindal said at the time. “What President Obama has obviously demonstrated for everyone is that he is incapable of successfully executing his duties as our Commander in Chief.”

“The gist of what Mayor Giuliani said — that the President has shown himself to be completely unable to speak the truth about the nature of the threats from these [Islamic State in Iraq and Syria] terrorists – is true," he continued in the statement. "If you are looking for someone to condemn the Mayor, look elsewhere."

Dem: Obama 'overstepped' on immigration

Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) said Tuesday that he will vote with Republicans against President Obama's 2014 immigration executive orders as part of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell's (R-Ky.) new plan to fund the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

"We need to have a clean DHS, Department of Homeland Security, funding bill. I've said that. Don't play politics with it. So now, Mitch McConnell is going to pull that out separately. I appreciate that. I support that wholeheartedly," Manchin said on CNN's "New Day."

Manchin referred to the injunction a Texas judge issued last week that has temporarily halted Obama's 2014 actions. 

"I agree the president went over, and he overstepped his boundaries," Manchin said. "I will vote against those orders, basically, if we have to vote on it. I will be voting with the Republicans on that issue there."

GOP gets bad news on ObamaCare repeal plan

The Senate’s chief referee has dealt a significant setback to conservatives who want to send an ObamaCare repeal bill to the president’s desk this year.

GOP sources say Senate Parliamentarian Elizabeth MacDonough has raised red flags in response to queries about whether it’s possible to use a special budgetary procedure to repeal the controversial law “root and branch,” as Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) has said.

Senate Republican officials have pushed for an interpretation of the rules that would allow for repealing the law with a one-sentence provision on a simple-majority vote.

The special process is known as budgetary reconciliation. It can be used to circumvent the Senate’s customary 60-vote threshold to produce changes in spending and revenue.  

But it’s a matter of debate about how broadly it can be interpreted.

Some conservatives argue that because ObamaCare impacts spending and revenue, 51 Senate Republicans and a majority of the House can pass a one-sentence provision. While President Obama would surely veto a repeal of the Affordable Care Act, many Republicans want to get such a measure on his desk.

And there is growing pressure on GOP leaders to make that happen. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and Tea Party groups, including FreedomWorks and the Senate Conservatives Fund, have called on the Republican-led Congress to use reconciliation on ObamaCare.

“We think from what we’ve heard there’s a really credible case to be made that the one-sentence repeal instruction for reconciliation passes all the tests,” said Dan Holler, spokesman for Heritage Action for America.

“From our vantage point, we think there are credible arguments that you can get all of ObamaCare [repealed] through reconciliation and that’s where the focus of lawmakers should be as the budget comes up and as instructions are written,” he added.

The Kentucky Republican has also refused to commit to using reconciliation on ObamaCare. Last fall, McConnell appeared to downplay expectations on a 51-vote strategy, telling Fox News that it would take 60 votes and a presidential signature to nullify the healthcare law. 

“No one thinks we’re going to get that,” McConnell said at the time.

If ObamaCare cannot be overturned with a one-sentence reconciliation bill, Republican senators will have to pick it apart section by section in a time-consuming process that will be laboriously debated with the Democrats.

House and Senate Republicans are expected to unveil budget blueprints in the coming weeks, with the goal of passing a unified resolution this spring. Decisions on what bills can pass Congress with 51 Senate votes under reconciliation rules must be made soon.

The Senate Budget Committee declined to comment for this article.

Senate Republican aides are split as to whether ObamaCare can be repealed cleanly.

“It would be great if we could, but we can’t,” said a Senate Republican leadership aide.

One conservative aide, however, said the budget could instruct the committees of jurisdiction, the Finance and the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions panels, to report bills that reduced the deficit by a certain amount. Those panels could then report relatively simple repeal bills that would pass with simple-majority votes.

BOISE, Idaho (AP) — An Idaho lawmaker received a brief lesson on female anatomy after asking if a woman can swallow a small camera for doctors to conduct a remote gynecological exam.

The question Monday from Republican state Rep. Vito Barbieri came as the House State Affairs Committee heard nearly three hours of testimony on a bill that would ban doctors from prescribing abortion-inducing medication through telemedicine.

Barbieri later said that the question was rhetorical and intended to make a point.

Dr. Julie Madsen, a physician who said she has provided various telemedicine services in Idaho, was testifying in opposition to the bill. She said some colonoscopy patients may swallow a small device to give doctors a closer look at parts of their colon.

"Can this same procedure then be done in a pregnancy? Swallowing a camera and helping the doctor determine what the situation is?" Barbieri asked.

Madsen replied that would be impossible because swallowed pills do not end up in the vagina.

Last week, however, the union called on members through Facebook to be careful on social media after officers were caught posting racially inflammatory comments online, warning: “Times have changed and we must also change to adapt to societal expectations.”

Asked by the Stranger to elaborate on those comments, Smith said: “If you don’t like the politics here, then leave and go to a place that serves your worldview.” He said this was a message that new recruits were now reminded of when they enrolled with the union.

“There are more than enough places across this country that are hiring law enforcement that have a different political landscape than here. And I don’t know why [disgruntled officers] don’t just go there,” he added.

this is encouraging but we've seen in the recent past those police captains and LT.'s and mayor's try to reverse the trend of brutality and outright murder the police resist and turn their backs as if to say "screw you we are out here on the fence to save you we deserve the respect and license to kill and maim", in some states mostly red ones the gov. supports this gestapo like law as well as local politicians i they didn't would it not exist?

On the heels of the Brian Williams incident, O'Reilly got on his high horse and somehow got the idea that he had the integrity to scold him.

Yes, Bill "loofahman" O'Reilly. The man who sits on a throne of lies at Fox News.

The man who, unlike Brian Williams, lied about winning two "Peabody" awards.

The man who, like Brian Williams,  lied about being in combat--except worse.  

O'Reilly claimed repeatedly that he was in the actual "war zone" of the Falkland Islands in 1982.  (He wasn't)  He said that he heroically rescued his cameraman in  "a war zone in Argentina, in the Falklands," while being chased by army soldiers.  (Nope--in fact we just learned he was ordered to leave Argentina for risking his cameraman's life.) O'Reilly didn't just tell this story once, but repeated it several times.  He has it in writing in his 2001 book and stated it as recently as 2013 on his show.

He also said he faced down an angry mob in Argentina who "stormed the presidential palace" and were "trying to overthrow the government".  (Lie.) He said soldiers "opened fire on" and "gunned down" civilians. (Complete lie).  He said all the other CBS journalists "cowered" in their hotel rooms while he was the only one who covered the story. (Bob Scheiffer got him on this one).

To sum up:  Lie, lie, lie, lie, lie.

Even Hugh freaking Hewitt, sensing a sinking ship, managed to call him out on some of his BS.

"Would you consider a riot a general combat definition?” Hewitt asked O'Reilly.

“Yeah, when it’s in a war setting, of course,” O'Reilly responded.

Hewitt also asked if the cameraman would back up his story of being saved by him.  Bill seemed annoyed and said he had "no idea" where the guy even was.

When your lies are so bad you are challenged by a conservative, you've crossed a line.

is the cameraman taking a paid vacation out of the country?  you might have notice the inflection in the text that Bill wasn't expecting that and was coming up with that answer on the fly.  if this guy could corroborate bilo's account and thereby in a small way exonerating him and Fox and CBS with all that fire power someone would either know where he was or be able to find him hell bilo always brags about being rich pay for a detective agency to find your witness for the defense.

As of now, the bureau chief for Mother Jones has said David Corn's life is in danger since Bill O'Reilly literally called for him to be killed.

That fact alone should be enough to end the career of such a lying, spiteful bastard.  

Unfortunately, O'Reilly's audience doesn't care about truth nor his calls for violence against his fellow Americans.

The CBS bureau chief in Buenos Aires, Larry Doyle, an ex-Marine LRRP, was something of a legend among CBSers because of his personal courage and his knowledge about how to do your job without exposing yourself to undue danger. Early that night in Buenos Aires he assembled the camera crews in our hotel newsroom and instructed them to refrain from using the lights on their cameras while around crowds. Television lights attracted potentially violent people and also made the camera-person an easier target for demonstrators throwing rocks. We all knew that the Argentine public was angry at the U.S. for supporting Britain in the war, so American journalists might become a target for mob violence. So, O'Reilly has been correct in describing the situation in Buenos Aires as somewhat dicey for reporters. If he was nervous, I can see why.

The riot around the presidential palace was actually short-lived. It consisted mostly of chanting, fist-shaking and throwing coins at the uniformed soldiers who were assembled outside the palace. I did not see any police attacks against demonstrators. According to Doyle, O'Reilly returned to the hotel in a rage over the fact that his cameraman wouldn't turn on the lights to photograph angry crowds. Doyle defended the cameraman and chewed out O'Reilly for violating his instructions on lights. When Doyle looked at the tape shot by O'Reilly's cameraman he saw that the video included stand-ups -- on camera description by the reporter -- which O'Reilly had ordered the cameraman to shoot -- with his light on. Doyle was further upset by this tape, which clearly showed that his orders on lights had been unilaterally violated by O'Reilly. The issue here was safety.

CBS was doing a late night re-cap of the Falkland's story. As always the Buenos Aires bureau had no combat video footage to offer, so our part of the special would be the demonstrations, which had been well covered by three or four camera crews, including the one working with O'Reilly. All that footage was blended into the main story, narrated by Schieffer, who had been in Buenos Aires for weeks as the anchor on the scene. When Doyle informed O'Reilly that Schieffer would be doing the report, which would not include any segment from O'Reilly, the reporter exploded. "I didn't come down here to have my footage used by that old man," he shouted. Doyle was stunned. First O'Reilly had defiantly ordered a cameraman to disregard his orders on using lights, and now he was claiming the right to do a story the producers had decided should be done by the senior correspondent on the scene, Schieffer. This confrontation led the next day to O'Reilly being ordered out of Argentina by the CBS bosses. Doyle had told them O'Reilly was a "disruptive force" who threatened his bureau's morale and cohesion.

given O'Reilly's ego he may have gone overboard on his description because of being denied i guess what he thought was his story still not a team player actually if what he did as reported in this article is true than he should have been fired for endangering crew, creating his own version thinking that he would be the one on camera reporting it but he was stripped of that actually it was never CBS's plan he was a no name trying to make a name again reason to hype the report.

 i think it was as i just wrote he thought this was his big break and instead got broken.  in order to be able to reclaim that opportunity loss he pads his past making him the Indiana Jones of foreign correspondents, saving lives, bucking mad crowds, bullets flying and he runs to the headquarters to break the story, now the story may be breaking him.

NEW YORK (AP) — CBS News on Monday released video from four stories it aired about the Falklands War in 1982, all part of a dispute involving Fox News Channel host Bill O'Reilly and his subsequent statements about covering the war.

None of the stories mentions O'Reilly, then a young CBS reporter, or makes any specific reference to a CBS crew member being hurt.

the video shows no more of a riot than we see here Ferguson might have had more violence.  if you listen closely to O'Reilly he's playing on words  and ignoring the original inferences of his being and reporting from the Falklands.  the gyuy on the phone seem to confirm loosely than not confirm saying at one point "you called it a riot" speaking to O'Reilly.

Former CBS News correspondent Eric Engberg, who also was covering the event, characterized O'Reilly's account as "dishonest" and "completely nutty" during a Huffington Post interview on Monday. Engberg said none of the camera operators working the night in question remembers any colleague being injured. The camera person who was said to be hurt has not spoken publicly about the matter.

During one of the CBS reports, then-anchor Dan Rather said that several television crew members were knocked to the ground and that North American television crews were "jostled."

i think he over embellished an incident as he does many times and true to his nature could not help repeating it.  but his intent i believe was to foster his presence where no one else was and reporting events no one else had.  i also notice his usual tactic of trying to discredit anyone who opposes him or his views, regardless to there relevance it's about agreeing with him or you are pond scum.

"I am here to tell you the Democratic Party has lost its way," said a panel member, Kentucky Gov. Steve Beshear. The problems are not with the "party's core beliefs," he said, but relate to "our inability to convey our principles to the American people in a precise, concise and passionate way."

Potential Republican presidential candidate Sen. Lindsey Graham has "no doubt" that President Obama loves his country, refuting comments made by former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani earlier this week.

“Well, I love Rudy, but I don’t want to go there. The nation’s very divided. President Obama has divided us more than he’s brought us together and I don’t want to add to that division,” Graham initially said on ABC's "This Week" today, before adding, “I have no doubt that he loves his country. I have no doubt that he’s a patriot. But his primary job as president of the United States is to defend this country and he’s failing miserably.”

The South Carolina senator said that part of that failure stems from labeling the threat posed by ISIS and other terrorist groups as “violent extremism” instead of “radical" Islamists.

Despite disapproval from the American people and his own country, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu still intends to speak before Congress on March 3rd in an effort to sabotage President Obama. But the White House isn’t going to let him get away with it and Israel stands to lose big time.

For years, Netanyahu has constantly whined that Iran is seeking a nuclear weapon to wipe Israel off the face of the Earth, which is pretty ironic considering Israel has made an effort to exterminate Palestinians.

 Rather than commit US blood and treasure to a catastrophic war against Iran, President Obama has slapped them with sanctions and has opened diplomatic relations in the hopes of maintaining peace by preventing Iran from getting a nuclear weapon while allowing the use of nuclear power to generate energy. Clearly, however, Netanyahu isn’t pleased by this. He would rather see American troops start World War III and risk their own lives while American taxpayers foot the bill for it instead of Israelis.

Republicans are also hawkish when it comes to Iran and they have pledged allegiance to a foreign leader instead of their own president. The GOP hates President Obama so much that House Speaker John Boehner blatantly broke US law to secretly invite Netanyahu to speak to a joint session of Congress so they could embarrass the president together. In turn, the White House promised that there would be a price to pay for this total lack of respect.

remember Netanyahu is a right winger with all the trimmings.  is his conscious getting to him they did the same thing and did not blink an eye now that the shoe is on the other foot he's about to crap his pants.  why is he so against another country having what they have does that not or suppose to level the field if both are holding neither will dare for fear of their own destruction in the effort, so Iran having a bomb is really diplomatic what Israel and the US have done is trying to deny another country of the same means of protection they enjoy.  i don't think it's right it's tantamount to determent camps of WWII contain the threat that hasn't manifested itself yet but in the mean time you hold all the power not the democratic thing to do.

i think Pres. may feel the same and seeking a diplomatic solution would be more assuring than going in guns blazin' and a nuke for show only strengthens Iran's resolve to defend itself against those demanding they don't get that capability. First, Giuliani stupidly declares Barack Obama “doesn’t love America,” just because our president isn’t some bible-thumping, jingoistic, war-mongering white guy. Then, the Big Apple’s former mayor almost immediately managed to somehow cram his other foot into his already alarmingly over-stuffed mouth by claiming what he said wasn’t racist, because Obama’s mother was white.

NYPD civil rights abuses during Giuliani’s tenure.

Did New York’s finest really shoot a black man in the back every five minutes under Giuliani’s watch? No, that’s clearly an exaggeration. Nonetheless, Giuliani has an appalling record when it comes to his dealings with the black community — and people of color in general.

For starters, Giuliani gave his then-Commissioner Bill Bratton a free-reign in deploying the overly aggressive law-enforcement, racial profiling and “crime prevention” tactics that have created today’s overly militarized police and climate of antagonism between police and communities of color. During Giuliani’s tenure, NYPD committed a series of horrifying murders and civil rights abuses, as listed in the New York Times:

April 29, 1994: An NYPD anti-drug patrol tried to arrest 22-year-old Ernest Sayon while he was standing outside of a housing complex in Staten Island, handcuffed him and pushed him to the ground, and suffocated him in the process. The grand jury declined to file criminal charges against the three officers, saying their use of force was reasonable.

Sept. 27, 1994: 13-year-old Nicholas Heyward was playing cops and robbers in a housing complex when NYPD Officer Brian George thought Heyward had a real rifle and shot him dead. Brooklyn’s district attorney chose not to put the case before a grand jury because the “real culprit” was that very real-looking toy gun.

Dec. 22 1994: 29-year-old Anthony Baez choked to death in the Bronx by NYPD officer Francis X. Livoti. In 1998 Livoti was convicted, and two fellow cops were found guilty of lying on the witness stand in his behalf.

Feb. 4 1999: Four plainsclothes cops pumped 41 gunshots into 22-year-old Amadou Diallo, a black man who was later found to be unarmed. They “mistook” him for a rapist who was later convicted. NYPD paid $3 million in damages to Diallo’s parents and the officers Street Crimes Unit was disbanded.

March 16, 2000: When 26-year-old Patrick Dorismond refused to tell undercover officer Anthony Vasquez how he could buy marijuana, a struggle ensued and Vasquez shot Dorismond dead. Police then discredited Dorismond by releasing his sealed juvenile record to reporters, claiming he had no right to privacy because he was dead. Like Darren Wilson, Vasquez never got indicted.

Oh, and let’s not forget public outrage and protests over NYPD’s abuse of Abner Louima — who was sodomized with a broom handle by NYPD Officer Justin Volpe in Brooklyn on August 8, 1997. Volpe pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 30 years in federal prison. Other officers were convicted for trying to cover up the incident.

with a record like his and still getting some play you have to wonder how NY'ers ever voted him in and then agreed to Oprah's erroneous dubbing of America's mayor.  why wasn't this stuff put out there more during his first 15 minutes?  wonder if he had just shut up would he still be heralded as America's mayor instead of mean spirited guy who looks like Mr. Burns on the Simpsons and just as devious?
