Wayne Simmons, a favorite guest of Fox News, is facing up to 35 years in prison for falsely claiming that he had worked for the Central Intelligence Agency for decades.
Simmons had been a frequent contributor to Fox because right-wing audiences loved the way a “CIA operative” tore into President Obama’s military strategy. The network gave him a blank check to say whatever he wanted – no matter how crazy it sounded – because of his supposed intelligence background.
This included warning viewers that there were “at least 19 paramilitary Muslim training facilities in the United States,” and floating the idea of creating razor-wire enclosed ghettos for Muslims. In 2005, on the eve of a midterm election, he was on Fox telling Americans if Democrats won “we’ll have 9/11’s unabated.” Needless to say, he also gave a full-throated defense of waterboarding, which he refused to accept was torture. No one at Fox seems to have raised an eyebrow to the comments.
Indeed, Simmons’ rabid hatred of Obama gained him access to nearly every show in Fox’s line-up. He had guest spots on Fox and Friends, he was a regular guest with Neil Cavuto (the pair shared a fondness for disgusting Islamophobia), and of Sean Hannity, and – most hilariously in hindsight – went on an unhinged rant with Fox’s Live Desk that accused Nancy Pelosi of being a “pathological liar.”
Actual pathological liar Wayne Simmons wasn’t just content to dupe Fox’s admittedly gullible audience. He wanted more. He ran into trouble because his serial lies were used to enrich himself by breaking federal law.
When not bashing Obama on Fox, his fabricated resume, federal investigators say, led him to gain government security clearances under false pretenses. Using those clearances, he was assigned lucrative defense contracts, including advising “senior military personnel overseas.” In short, Simmons defrauded the federal government by pretending he was the covert CIA badass Fox News wanted him to be.
On the homefront, Simmons was engaging other criminal activities. According to court documents, Simmons is alleged to have had a “significant criminal history, including convictions for a crime of violence and firearms offenses, and is believed to have had an ongoing association with firearms notwithstanding those felony convictions.”
In a desperate move, Simmons appears to have gone all in on his lies as the walls closed in. Rather than fess up to a lifetime of fabrications, Simmons allowed his defenders to argue the reason nobody could find any of his history with the CIA was because he was so covert. Simmons, a guy who couldn’t stay away from a Fox News camera for more than five minutes, was billed as some sort of super spy working in the shadows of the CIA.
Instead, Simmons appears to be a sad, angry conservative who used his false identity to speak from a position of authority to other sad, angry conservatives. He now faces 35 years in federal prison for the fraud charges, and possibly more if he winds up getting charged for his illegal possession of firearms. Even his friends and Fox and Friends aren’t coming to his aid. In a statement, a Fox representative told CNN that he was merely a”non-paid guest” and not necessarily a “contributor.” Ouch.
if i found out time after time the news outlets i trusted was lying to me getting fake offocials to embellish their homemade contrivances i would no longer associate them and my TV and would spread the word till i died, the sadder part of this is the many sucked in by Fox's deceptive practices having their viewers out in publican repeating what the heard there only to be criticized and laughed at as the one that was concentrated on. G W Bush, "you can fool some of the people all of the time and those are the ones you want to concentrate on", says it all as does the interpretation of stupid, "seeing the truth hearing it and still believe the lies". rember the obamacare liars on Hannity??
