Chris Christie’s decimation of the Garden State wouldn’t be complete without sending a few thousand terminally ill and chronically disabled people into homelessness just before winter, so he’s managed to find a way to do just that. Two emergency programs aimed at helping 3,019 of New Jersey’s sickest people expired in 2012, but have been on a 3-year extension while a judge ruled on whether or not some of them would qualify for permanent support.
While the people in question have known that their funding was set to expire this year, none were prepared for the Christie administration to simply turn its back on them. Unfortunately, that’s exactly what is happening. In a letter to the directors of county welfare departments, the administration simply wrote that the funding was expiring and that no new program was coming to replace it.
To terminally ill patients, being sentenced to homelessness is a death warrant. Once again, the party that cherishes life isn’t interested unless you’re developing in a womb.
Christie’s New Jersey has seen little to no growth since he took office in 2010. His state has the 14th highest unemployment rate in the country, coupled with some of the highest rental prices in the nation. Those two things together spell disaster for the disabled and the working poor, who struggle enough with the stigma of being such a “burden” while the corporate welfare system doles out nearly $6 billion to the state’s corporate masters.
The program that has kept the 3,000+ people from dying homeless in a gutter was costing the taxpayers just under $15 million.
“[the move is]the largest sudden change in policy toward people who are homeless or are at risk of being homeless since the late 80s or early 90s,” said Legal Services of New Jersey executive directorMelville Miller. “These are vulnerable people who have a tiny stream of income each month. They are not going to be able to fend for themselves.”
That doesn’t seem to be of any concern to Chris Christie, who had no problem offering JP Morgan Chase $190 million in tax breaks just this past July to relocate to New Jersey. In fact, Christie has shown that all you need to get special consideration from his administration is to not be needy, sick or dying. If you’re those things you might lose your benefits and your home.
it still confounds me how these guys can have such egregious skeletons in their closets and still think they can run to be the president unscathed. the positives the lie about are almost always the opposite of what they have actually done to let them tell it the saved their state from annihilation by space creatures and Dems in that order. balancing budgets but most now are either begging for federal assistance or just thinking they can deny it away. these are the republican finest crop this go round???????????
