Bernie Sanders Takes Shot At Clinton On DOMA To Maddow: ‘That Just Wasn’t True’ (VIDEO)

Last week, Hillary Clinton sat with Rachel Maddow and tried to claim that signing laws like the Defense of Marriage Act and “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell” were, what she called, “defensive action” on behalf of her husband’s administration in the 1990s.
“On Defense of Marriage, I think what my husband believed,” Clinton began, “and there was certainly evidence to support it — is that there was enough political momentum to amend the Constitution of the United States of America, and that there had to be some way to stop that… And so, in — in a lot of ways, DOMA was a line that was drawn that was to prevent going further.”
Rival Bernie Sanders took issue with that in Monday evening’s interview with Maddow.
“It bothered me to hear Secretary Clinton saying ‘Well, what DOMA was about was to prevent something even worse,’” Sanders said. “That just wasn’t true. It wasn’t true.”
In 1996, former President Bill Clinton signed DOMA, which was an attempt to federally define marriage as between one man and one woman. It wasn’t fully struck down until this past year when the Supreme Court called BS. Former Secretary Hillary Clinton was similarly opposed to same-sex marriage until 2013.
By contrast, Sanders was one of only 67 people in the House to vote against DOMA.
Sanders called into question the Clinton leadership and judgment around not just this issue but other issues. “We live in a tough world and leadership counts,” he said, “It is important to stand up when the going is tough…What the American people and Democrats have to know: Which candidate historically has had the guts to stand up to powerful people and take difficult decisions?”
Sanders went on to allude to Clinton’s answer as being a one of political expediency, not values. “You can argue that… ‘I don’t agree with DOMA politically but I have to do it,’ but you can’t say that DOMA was passed in order to prevent something worse,” he said. “That is just not the case.”
this is not IMO a Bernie power point attacking on an issue looks like he might not be clear on himself.  he could have responded in a more Progressive manner and not a republican standard, it might cost him who knows but he should leave it alone address it if it comes up explain what he feels not what he thinks she does take a lesson from republicans Bernie they always get burned while trying to explain away.
