As much as Kim Davis has been trying to hoodwink the public, whip up evangelical outrage and the religious persecution complex over her refusal to deny marriage licenses for gay couples, she actually made a good decision - although it had nothing to do with gay marriage. As much as she wants to profit from her cause, whoever is advising her made the right call to deny the Oath Keepers the job of offering her protection from the feds.
Kentucky county clerk Kim Davis declined an offer from the Oath Keepers, an anti-government group comprised of former law enforcement officials and military members, to protect her from arrest by federal authorities, the group announced on Friday.
"Upon request by Kim Davis’ legal team, Oath Keepers is canceling the planned security detail for Mrs. Davis in Morehead, Kentucky," the group's founder, Stewart Rhodes, said in a statement. "We will, of course, respect her wishes, and are hereby issuing a stand-down for our security volunteers who were planning on deploying to Morehead, Kentucky on Monday."
The Oath Keepers offered last week to "protect" Davis from any U.S. Marshals that attempt to arrest her. The group said that the judge who sent Davis to jail "grossly overstepped his bounds and violated Mrs Davis’ due process rights, and in particular her right to a jury trial."
Rhodes told his members on Friday that they were still permitted to rally in support of Davis and her efforts in Kentucky.
I imagine she's going to have herself arrested again because if she slips into the background and lets her deputies handle all the marriage licences then she'll have had her fifteen minutes and fade away.
But regardless, if she surrounded herself with the anti-government Oath Keepers, violence would have certainly followed. Even if cooler heads prevailed and the Oath Keepers didn't engage, she would have made herself look more like an Alex Jones freak instead of the victimized Christian that she's playing up.
more and more right wingers are becoming conscious of what they are portrayed as or will be remembered as if at all and it doesn't look appealing. yeah it was right to deny those with a history of civil opposition to gov't with snipers and such to once again show opposition to law and threatening gov't agents, remember Cliven Bundy and Ferguson pics??????
