Presidential candidate Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) on Sunday defended his comments from last month accusing the media of being "obsessed with sex" after he was asked whether he had problem with gay people.
The remark in question came during a confrontation with a local reporter in Beaumont, Texas on May 19, after the journalist repeatedly asked the candidate about his stance on gay rights.
"Is there something about the left — and I am going to put the media in this category — that is obsessed with sex?" Cruz responded.
Speaking with Fox News media analyst Howard Kurtz on Sunday, Cruz said that the reporter had specifically asked if he had an "animosity" toward gay people, and explained why he didn't simply deny it.
"There is a reason for answering as I did," he told Kurtz.
"There's a trap in politics that when someone denies something — when Nixon says 'I am not a crook,' everyone says, 'he's a crook,'" Cruz continued.
Kurtz agreed.
"I wasn't going to give him that attack headline," Cruz said. "That question was designed to get me to deny it, so then he could run as the headline, 'hahaha,' he denies this."
does he think that was clever avoiding a legitimate question by trying to delegitamize it is old school and has more holes than Swiss cheese it's not a trick or a trap question it simply requires a yes or no which he obviously was afraid to respond to. yes would label him homophobic and no would do as he said look questionable but isn't dodging more damaging that leaves the entire country to form their own opinion he gave it away and it will come back with a vengeance.
silence can be golden but it can also be a political career killer too. don't be surprised if the press doesn't hit him with more of the same and his comrades on the right he is not beloved.
