In his State of the Union address last year, President Barack Obama, just weeks after winning reelection, delivered a speech with real punch. He presented a fiercely progressive agenda, and it seemed there actually might be a chance that a few items on his to-do list—
immigration reform or gun-safety measures—would make it through Congress, despite the continuing influence of die-hard tea-partiers in the House Republican caucus. Obama forcefully declared then that he would boldly pursue important initiatives.
He was making good use of post-election momentum by putting forward an ambitious game plan. It was a call to action that embodied the currents of the moment. The speech was big. A year later, Obama has downsized.
i usually like David Corn's work but beg to differ here, on the real Pres. is dealing with the most radical parties in one that are old school in some cases and neo nazi in others, yes he did call them out and we got the do nothing-est year in history and they are not ashamed they claim they are doing what they were sent there to do wreck the gov't and the country until they get their way, old school just can't get with the Black guy in the WH.
after is first win before he took office they sat planning this obstruction of 5 years, telling us on national TV they wee going to sink him and have his policies all fail, and what does fickle America do leave them in office to continue their destruction of recovery of their sinking of America, and we let them get to accuse Pres. for it all, where are the truth sayers where is the noise why is this still an issue as birther BS???
Clearly, Obama has recognized the reality that obstructionist Republicans on the Hill render big things virtually impossible. After all, the past few years have shown that they can barely keep the government open. So in this year's State of the Union address, Obama talked about large needs, particularly boosting economic opportunity and bolstering the economy for the tough competition of this century.
But he didn't invest much in promoting grand pieces of legislation. He instead made the case for a host of policies that could nudge the nation in a better direction: tax reform that closes corporate loopholes, gun-safety measures, immigration reform, patent reform, infrastructure investment, Head Start expansion, a boost in federal funds for scientific research, ending gender inequality in pay, extending unemployment insurance, curbing subsidies for fossil fuels, and a higher minimum wage for all workers.
if he had come off like a buster those on the right would keep on resisting his agenda they have already damaged them selves beyond reasonable voters and alienated everybody else they have nothing to really lose that they haven't already,
makes them dangerous nothing to lose and give a damn attitude= more of the same Pres still has 3 years he's looking ahead and like before he will OutBama them again and again just like he's done the last 5, who's the winner you America without his perseverance status quo would still rule throughout your life.
yes he wants the big plans health care, immigration, the grand bargain, jobs but the republicans don't and they control  part that can deny it all.  stop blaming him for doing his job and start firing them for not doing their's. recognize
