Article PhotoA majority of the Supreme Court seemed skeptical Tuesday that the current aggregate limit on the amount an individual can contribute to federal candidates in an election cycle can pass constitutional muster.
Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. suggested several times that he was uncomfortable restricting an individual from giving to as many candidates as the person chooses, so long as the donations are below the amount that Congress says could lead to or create the appearance of corruption. Roberts is considered the key vote in the latest challenge to Watergate-era restrictions on campaign finance.
The limit currently is set at $48,600 per two-year election cycle. Roberts noted that meant an individual could give the maximum amount allowed by law to only nine candidates and not to a 10th.
That could impinge on “something we’ve recognized as a significant right,” Roberts said.
The chief justice seemed to be looking for a way for the court to lift the aggregate ban on candidate contributions but keep a separate restriction on the amount given to political parties and committees.
another waste of money to determine whether or not you can give more money to buy a candidate, c'mon all the restrictions are crap all they need to do is donate under different names and pacs we know how they have increased, was that because they were trying to get around the law????  big pacs raised millions Karl Rove blew 300 million they don't have enough candidates to waste that much and stay within the lawful limit of contribution. think about it and that was just on pac.
Solicitor General Donald B. Verrilli Jr. said that lifting the limits in the way proposed by Alabama businessman Shaun McCutcheon and the Republican National Committee would allow an individual to contribute more than $3.5 million, rather than the current limit of $123,000.
is this the republican answer to their recent lost throw more money in the form of lies and innuendo and misinformation, woe they sure have a lot of problems that buying help to learn how to talk to Americans and self autopsy and all they walk away with in is "let's do it again"?
