STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Plastic garbage bags: They line the sidewalks of Staten Island's evacuation zone, filled with the waterlogged keepsakes of lives washed away by Hurricane Sandy.
But days out from the disaster, the plastic bags piling up at churches, shelters and other collection sites are a source of solace: Stuffed with clothes, food, water, diapers and other necessities, they testify to how much Staten Islanders are aching to help.
"It started Tuesday as a simple idea to make donations from friends, family," said Frank Wilkinson, manager of Rab's Country Lane, as he looked at the parking lot with gently used clothes stacked on tables, where dozens of volunteers sorted and folded the stacks into piles by size, age, and gender.
Inside the Dongan Hills bowling alley, barely illuminated by two small lamps run on a generator, food, clothes and water lined the floor and tables.
Still, with the quantity of donations coming in, the question is now how to get the supplies to those affected by the devastation.
And for many people still cleaning out their destroyed homes, what they need most is help with that heart-wrenching task.
"Batteries, blankets, diapers, toiletries," said Wilkinson, ticking off a list of the material items he's been told are most in demand.
Nearby, members of the North Shore Rotary packed some of those supplies into a truck heading to hard-hit Midland Beach to barbecue 450 donated hot dogs and hamburgers to residents digging out of their homes.
