As state legislatures across the country pass legislation to require voters to present photo ID at the polls, many Democrats and civil rights leaders have protested that voter ID laws disenfranchise people who lack proper identification. Some even claim the laws are designed to intentionally sway elections by suppressing the vote of demographics that tend to vote Democratic (mostly young people and minorities). Republicans, of course, always deny this and say they are merely trying to protect the security of the vote and prevent fraud.

But one of Pennsylvania’s top Republican leaders may have tipped his hand this weekend when he suggested to a meeting of Republican officials that the purpose of voter ID laws is to help his party’s presidential nominee win. PoliticsPA’s Kelly Cernetich quoted state House Majority Leader Mike Turzai at the Republican State Committee meeting:

Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission, decided in January 2010, struck down federal limits on campaign spending by corporations and unions as violations of the First Amendment. Justice Anthony Kennedy, writing on behalf of Chief Justice John Roberts and Justices Antonin Scalia, Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito, reached the bold conclusion that "independent expenditures, including those made by corporations, do not give rise to corruption or the appearance of corruption," and therefore "[n]o sufficient governmental interest justifies limits on the political speech of nonprofit or for-profit corporations."

i knew this was going to bite the scotus, it was to blaring of a disproportionate unjust law that invited other countries to buy stock if not the deed to parts of America. and you see what side is all for the corruptible influence of other we don't know where it's been money.

 Justice Stephen Breyer, joined by Justices Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Sonia Sotomayor and Elena Kagan, wrote to dissent from the summary reversal. "Were the matter up to me, I would vote to grant the petition for certiorari in order to reconsider Citizens United or, at least, its application in this case."

The nine Supreme Court justices and more than three dozen other people have kept quiet for more than two months about how the high court is going to rule on the constitutionality of President Barack Obama's health care overhaul.

Unlike the president, who needs to be re-elected every four years and needs positive publicity to help, the justices have lifetime appointments and don't need favorable publicity to keep their jobs. Sam Brownback (R), a federal initiative to promote marriage as a cure for poverty dumped hundreds of millions of dollars into programs that either had no impact or a negative effect on the relationships of the couples who took part, according to recent research by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).

Launched during the Bush administration at the behest of evangelical Christian activists and with the aid of congressional Republicans, the federal Healthy Marriage Initiative was designed to help low income couples put a little sizzle in their marriages and urge poor unmarried parents to tie the knot, in the hopes that marriage would enhance their finances and get them off the federal dole. Starting in 2006, millions of dollars were hastily distributed to grantees to further this poverty-reduction strategy. The money went to such enterprises as "Laugh Your Way America," a program run by a non-Spanish speaking Wisconsin minister who used federal dollars to offer "Laugh Your Way to a Better Marriage" seminars to Latinos. It funded Rabbi Stephen Baars, a British rabbi who'd been giving his trademarked"Bliss" marriage seminars to upper middle class Jews in Montgomery County, Maryland for years. With the help of the federal government, he brought his program to inner city DC for the benefit of African-American single moms.

The marriage money was diverted from the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program (formerly known as welfare), and much of it went to religious groups that went to work trying to combat the divorce rate in their communities by sponsoring date nights and romance workshops.

Much attention has been paid to students who bully students in class, after school and on the Internet. Less has been given to equally disturbing behavior by students who harass instructors, principals and other adults.

It's something that's long existed; think ganging up on the substitute teacher. But it has become increasingly cruel and even dangerous as students get access to advanced technology at earlier ages.

In Maryland, students posed as their vice principal's twin 9-year-old daughters on pedophile websites, saying they had been having sex with their father and were looking for a new partner. Elsewhere, students have logged on to neo-Nazi and white supremacist sites claiming to be a Jewish or minority teacher and inciting the groups' anger. Others have stolen photographs from teachers' cellphones and posted them online.

i'm not going to say "what's the world coming to" it's here, we can only look forward to more ingenious ways for kids to bully, demean, assault, ruin lives to suicide, and mental derangement. 

again i start at the parents, parent whatever, i know today's hardships in trying to maintain a family structure has been all but deleted by right wing tactics deprive those who need help in favor of another select group of selfish beings.

His Senate hearing was hardly a grilling; senators mostly praised him for his "emphasis on continuous quality improvement," in the words of Senator Jim DeMint, R-S.C.

Congressmen and staff from the committee have gone to JPMorgan and its lobbying firms. Members have also gotten hefty campaign contributions from the bank's PACs and employees.

What Really Happens If the Supreme Court Strikes Down the Mandate?

If the court upholds the law, then everything goes forward as planned. If they strike down the entire law, then everything stops. The only interesting question is: What if they strike down the individual mandate but uphold the rest of the law?

from the right's position it's all about their devotion to insurance co. as opposed to "we the people".

But without a mandate, they're unlikely to get a random selection of customers. Instead, healthy folks will probably stay out of the market and buy coverage only when they come down with some kind of serious illness. This is a disaster for insurers. They aren't getting regular premium payments from these customers, but they still have to pay for their million-dollar proton beam therapy when they get prostate cancer. Too much of this kind of behavior and they'll be out of business. That's why this dynamic is called a "death spiral."

After initially defending its controversial sneakers, Adidas rightfully decided to cancel its plans to release the JS (Jeremy Scott) Roundhouse Mid shoe this week amid intense public criticism, saying “we apologize if people are offended by the design.” Set to release in August, the now infamous “slave shoes” were briefly marketed on the company’s Facebook page as “a sneaker game so hot you lock your kicks to your ankles.” The price tag that Adidas tacked on for helping its customers “tighten up [their] style” with chains and shackles? $350. 

Even then, Adidas recognized African Americans as a powerful economic force within the American fashion industry when few others did.  

This notch under Adidas’s historical belt is why it’s so disturbing to think that it allowed a symbol of enslavement to make its way through its approval pipeline. Cultural trust was betrayed when the company didn’t factor centuries of subjugation and alarming African American mass incarceration rates into its decision-making. Who does the company have sitting around its board room tables?

One thing I've never seen is a bigot cite actual racism as a defense against their own racism. Enter the bizarre case of Barbara Espinosa, a right-wing radio host in Arizona who said the following of Barack Obama:

"I don't believe in calling him the first black president," she said, "I voted for the white guy myself. I call him a monkey."

the right is showing their real colors now that they have a single target, we only hear it in relation to the Pres. but it is so profane it's IMO not completely digested by those on the progressive bench the other's it is just another day at the____you fill in that one.  

these other's clearly are satisfied with a gov't not of "them the people", but populated by those who are setting the schedule for the coordinated time in the barrel their base will have right along side us. howdy neighbor!

we the people of color have never been mistaken of it's existence. some hibernated, other's were relegated to coded buzz words. but i think that their real test of how much they can get away with of their racist agenda, was when hate Representative Joe Wilson shout at the Pres.'s speech on healthcare, "you lie" the entire right wing was giddy almost to peeing their pants, can't imagine the high five's and #1 finger waving in their closed door "victory"?
